The Detroit autoshow is coming up. (January 7) What do you think? Will there be a next Viper? And if so what will the changes be?

Wow! Talk about alot of new highly anticipated HP cars. Any one of these cars by themselves would be a thrill but we almost have one from each of the manufacturers. This is setting up to be a great year.

I can save you all a bunch of time: The magazines will bash it because it's not wussified with a bunch of nanny controls like the vet. They will whine like a little girl with a skinned knee about the heat, and probably complain about the seats. We'll hear more crap about it letting go at the limit with no warning because someone spun and it bruised their precious little ego (it's always easier to blame the Viper than admit you cannot drive a REAL car). And of course, it's NOT a daily driver like the vet. Is this starting to sound familiar yet?

What you're not going to read about is that since 1992 the Corvette has managed to come out on top only ONCE in those 14 years, and it was short lived. The Viper has never been a car produced for the masses. It's purpose built, by hand, with pride and passion for a lucky few. Unfortunatly some people will just never understand it's about raw emotion; not traction control and heads up displays.

What the heck is a Hummer H4? I guess it is a power wheels toy for the kids. :D

Hummer H4: The H4 will be Hummer’s competitor for the Jeep Wrangler. It will be based on the GMT-355 platform and will have a removable top and doors. It will also be the cheapest vehicle in the Hummer line-up, starting in the mid $20,000’s. It may arrive in 2008.

That pretty much sums it up. I think the new Viper will have around 630-650 and lose some weight maybe in the hood and fender areas. Just a guess though.

Very anxious. Sure is a treat to live in the Detroit area and get the close up view... only about 3 wks to go.

I'm really looking forward to the next NSX and next Viper as well. They both should be amazing. I have a feeling that the NSX will take til '09 or '10 to go into production at the earliest though.

Reworked hood, 2 Throttle Bodies, maybe some valve work. There are those who have seen, and heard, such things in person within the DC confines. ...along with talk of +/- 625 HP. The hood and TBs can also be easily seen on the world wide web. Is this leaking a ploy?.......or the real thing? I guess the show will tell the tale. Might have to take a hike down there again. The last trip down in 2004 was through 2 feet of wet snow that Detroit is ill prepared to deal with.

There would be widespread howling about nannytech but I would not be a bit surprised to see an ESP button on the dash of the vehicle.

The SRT engineers,on this web site, stated Detroit will introduce the new Viper with a VVT engine.

Who wouldn't want an Extra-Sensory Perception button?! Push the button to know about upcoming accidents to avoid! Push the button to know about hidden cops ahead! Sign me up!

If the Viper remains in existence and is introduced at the "D" Show (which I think it will be).

I believe it will be far more than a new hood and engine. The amount of time retooling the production line indicates this.

A couple of mules with a Gen III body and a weird hood, means nothing in regards to what we will see. Look at DC's actions. It is either the tightest lipped vehicle launch in their history or a terrible way to end the life/saga of their flagship car.

I think the Gen IV will be there and If it isn't, perhaps it will be a new $100k+ (ME/10)?

1. ESP = electronic stability program.

2. Kudos to DC for the extraordinary security. Its not easy to maintain it these days.

New engine over 600 HP, no cam, capable of factory upgrading to 900 HP as needed to stay ahead of competition.

I would be surprised if it is over 600hp. My guess is 535 or something. Maybe a lighter car ( I think the current model is about 300lbs heavier than the Z06) and hopefully better gearing. I think if the base SRT had 3.42 rear gears like the Z06 we would see much closer acceleration times.

I would also guess some wheels, hood and interior color changes. We probably wont see 600hp on anything but a special edition car.

But also everyone anticipated the Viper to have upgraded power a year ago (which would have been far better timing against Z06), so I'm really hoping that DC doesn't drop the ball again.

I don't think that even 550HP will be enough of a difference to turn things around, especially with the 600HP Corvette SS about to debut. The Viper needs at least 600HP to keep it's reputation as a top contender in new high performance cars! :2tu:

It's easy to keep a concept car quiet, everyone seems to be able to do that.

However, a real production car being kept quiet until its premier, who has done that? I can't think of one production car that didn't have "pre launch" spy shots, write ups and the like.

Per my other armchair musings in this forum, I think we will hear a deafening silence at NAIAS. I would like to be wrong on this.
