Hi!
My name is Marcel and i am from holland.
apologies for my bad english sometimes.

We are building a gen 2 viper engine for a tractorpulling purpose. It wil run on methanol as a fuel, and wil be atmospheric.
We have a question about the difference between the gen2 and gen3 camshafts, because my parts
supplier can only deliver a gen3 camshaft and timing set.
The question is if the gen3 camshaft fits into the gen2 block and if we can use the timing chain(
adjustable) set of the gen 3. I have read somewhere the only difference there is, is de lobe timing, and thet gear pin. in our case timing does not matter because we wil order the cam with our own Specifications.
As the camshaft comes whit installation card the timing with a dialindicator is not any problem.
I hope you can help me forwart!

I already dit a search, but dit not find an answer.

With kind regards,
Marcel

Sounds like a cool project, got any pictures? Hopefully someone will chime in with some information. All I can tell from the factory parts books is that they are different part numbers, but that doesn't mean they couldn't still physically swap.

Were there not two different Gen II camshafts ??!!!

That could be right, but they where only different in timing i thought.
Because we design our own timing, i only need to know if the camshaft of the gen3 will fit in the gen2 block.
For example, is the measure of the bearings, the length and place of the cams the same?
I know the mounting of the timing gear is different but if we use a gen 3 timing chain set, that is no problem

there are much better cams avail than the OEM.

He's not necessarily going OEM though, he's asking if a gen 3 camshaft will physically fit and operate in a gen 2 block. He is getting an aftermarket cam, but the place he's getting it from can only make a gen 3 camshaft.

All I can say is the part numbers are different when looking at the part books, so they changed something, which I realize isn't that helpful. I'm fairly sure they would fit just based on the block not changing that much (stuff like cylinder centerlines and all that), but beyond that I can't really say as I haven't had one apart.

Having a shop for 40 years I have learned a few things, one of them is with parts, a company will list the coverage as wide as possible, when you look at after market cams even with the same specs for some reason gen 2 and gen 3 have different part numbers, so that tells me they are most likely different, but if it was me I would call Jon B or Woodhouse to make sure.
