  • They just won it all, and now they give it up-:omg:
  • Announcement to withdraw from racing program with the conclusion of the 2014 IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship season

Chrysler Group LLC announced today that it is discontinuing the factory-backed SRT® (Street and Racing Technology) Motorsports racing program in IMSA (International Motor Sports Association) with the conclusion of the 2014 season. This decision affects participation in the IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship with the Dodge Viper SRT GTS-R GTLM-class team. The Dodge brand will redirect its focus and efforts on the brand's product lineup.

"Our company has made a business decision to discontinue the SRT Motorsports Dodge Viper GTS-R racing program," said Ralph Gilles, Senior Vice President of Product Design, Chrysler Group LLC. "We are very proud of the amazing achievements our fantastic teams, drivers and partners have achieved on track the last few seasons. We thank them for their hard work, effort and commitment to SRT Motorsports. It's been an honor to be a part of the inaugural IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship season and we wish them every success in the future."

I think they knew this was coming when not showing up for the very expensive Le Mans 24 race too. I just cannot believe how well they did this year and now they are done.

Sad, but if one is going to redirect resources, best to do it after winning. I assume that this: "The Dodge brand will redirect its focus and efforts on the brand's product lineup." means the money will be spent on TV Ads, etc. If that includes the Viper, that would be great. Many bpeople still do not know the car exists.

Rebates used to be considered money spent on marketing, not sure if that's still true. But, if it is, the $15k rebate and voucher would cut into the racing program, which is also marketing.

I think race support is a hard sell when the only people who care (or even know) that the Viper won a championship are the people who are already fans of the car.

As Bob says, many don't even know the car exists, let alone know it's racing and winning.

I predict the Viper will not be made after the 2015 model year. There are tons of tweets on how people are flat ********** about this SRT thing too.

I was extremely disappointed to hear the news today :omg:

From a business perspective, I can understand (some what) why Dodge decided to drop its' racing program. However, the Viper has always been and will continue to be a racer first and foremost. In my opinion, part of its' lure / legacy / attraction and marketing campaign should be based in a competitive race series like TUDOR. It validates the car's legacy and legitimacy when it competes and wins against the likes of Corvette, BMW, Porsche, Ferrari, and Audi.

But on a more personal level, I feel very bad for the team personnel (SRT Motorsports and Viper Exchange) who now find themselves looking for other jobs. I don't know if Dodge gave the teams any fore warning, but its a crappy way to end a championship winning season......"Thanks for busting your ass and winning a championship for us, here's your pink slip  "

I sure hope you are wrong. If they make a convertible it will sell and keep the snake alive.

They had a good run, just like they will be saying about new Vipers in a couple years .....Sad ,but this is reality....Major updating of Viper if it is to survive...I have been a guest of Porsche NA to several races after buying two new 911 Turbo Ss,I have to say, what a first class operation,I mean everything....They spend endless money on Motor Sport and their Guests...All Comp....

I don't think you will ever see Porsche out of MotorSports,as this technology is directly transferred into their road machines...That is why the are so fast and reliable ....

This is what Dodge needs to do instead of quitting Motorsports...

RIP SRT Motorsports....

I bought my 96 GTS because of Vipers success (and the historical link to) LeMans. Porsche, BMW, Ferrari all have the reputation in sports car circles they do because of their year after year involvement in sports car racing (not NASCAR). It has taken Corvette racing 15 years of hard work to earn a level of respect that was never there before. This is terrible news.

Maybe they just wanted to prove a point but its sad that the mighty Viper gets treated like the red-headed step-child..
I agree with Bob,who knows about the Viper????? The marketing department for the Dodge Viper really dropped the ball on the Gen V they should all be fired! That said I have owned 5 Vipers and will soon own a sixth. Long live the Viper

The Viper will never die. Too much history, too much potential. Looking forward to seeing the next rendition.

The Viper deserves a company and team like Corvette, Porsche etc have behind it with funds for longevity in motorsports and productions based cars. It just seems that the Viper will never get what it deserves and will always be on a comparative shoe string budget. People will always be worth more than material things to me so I wont say they should all be fired over this and/or if the Viper gets the ax. But some serious restructuring has to be done with the management at SRT/Dodge for obvious reasons.

I hope they make the best of this disappointing news by funneling that now freed up motorsport money into a vert, ACR and a boosted Viper Hellsnake.

Unfortunate for all of us Viper fans, but as a business decision - perhaps not an unwise one. Likely the majority of Dodge's retail customers interested in road course racing are in the Viper and Challenger product lines. A very narrow slice of all that is Dodge, so win on sunday sell on Monday may not play as well for Dodge as it did for Chevy selling Monte Carlos in the 80's after a NASCAR race.

Weirdly enough, the shoe string budget of the Viper is one of the reasons I've always liked it so much. Maybe it's an engineer thing, but when you make the most of what you have and make a world beating car out of parts sourced from minivans (original Viper at least), that just makes me smile. It's the engineering division looking all other car companies in the eye and giving them the middle finger. "You spent $500 million on your latest car with more computing power than NASA? That's cool, we just went down to the junkyard and found some parts and built a faster car."

While I agree that it ***** they're pulling a factory team from the series, I don't think that means it's the end for Viper racing. Pretty sure you can still buy a GT3-R and race the series like Keating does. No different than a comp coupe or an ACR-X and I don't believe there is any mention of them cancelling that particular car. Wasn't the ORECA team technically a 3rd party or were they backed directly by the factory? Either way, we still need to support those who still raise the flag proudly like Keating. Hopefully more racers will step up and buy a GT3-R so we can see more snakes slithering through the road courses.

This is terrible news and essentially a peak into what is to come down the pike. This might very well be the end of an era. I, for one, am very sad to hear this awful news. I will be ordering a 2015 from John Gastman and Roanoke as soon as he gives me the go ahead.

Do you think this has anything to do with the sales failure of the Gen V? Or do you think Dodge was gonna get out, regardless of how many Gen V sell?

I think its most likely a money issue period. They didnt go to Le Mans either as that would have been an expensive undertaking. They said it in the press release they want to focus on the SRT lineup now. That probably means they dont have the budget to keep both going imho. This was a pretty good race team and drivers that they just moth-balled. I dont think you do that unless you dont have the capitol to keep both going. Their main priority and reason for existance is selling street cars. We have always known they can race a car, but they dont know how to market a halo car. Maybe they should focus on one thing now and try to have success in marketting and selling their lineup now that they have achieved the championship in racing.

I wouldn't necessarily call the gen 5 a sales failure. Look at how many 09 and 10 cars they sold. Each of those years was under 1000, I think one was even closer to 500. I'm hoping for the positive side of things and that they plan to put that money back into the car. Maybe the $15k price cut had to come from somewhere and the racing team is honestly the first place to look. Say they build 1000 cars with the $15k discount, that's 15 million dollars right there they are losing from what they expected. Maybe that margin was already built into the car's price, but that's not something most if any of us are privy to. When all is said and done, the race team is the least important piece of the puzzle. You might win fans with success on the track, but it's still limited exposure. Usually the fans you have are the ones that already own the cars. I don't know that any Vette owners out there are going to suddenly go buy a Viper because they won the series. They'll just say they need more performance balancing.

Pouring $15 million into advertising and getting the name out there with commercials and stuff is going to generate a lot more buzz than wining in a race series that frankly, not many people watch. Just look at the television coverage and you'll see what I mean. The Tudor series is all about the DP class and most of the time it's what the announcers are talking about because they're the fastest cars in the field. Sure, there have been some really good battles in GT that they cover from time to time, but more often than not you don't see more than a few minutes of GT car racing in a broadcast.

Admittedly, racing is one of the best ways to get technology to trickle down into road cars, but it's also hugely expensive and might **** money from other R&D divisions. It's always gloom and doom around here, we need to look at the bright side of this. Hopefully the extra money that might now be available is for development of the car that doesn't pertain to racing. A supercharged car really has no place in any racing series (not that chassis development doesn't carry over between models), but if you had to pick between spending money to certify an engine or racing which would you pick? A convertible is similarly alienated from racing, but it's still going to cost money to develop and tool up.

Instead of everyone throwing in the towel now, why don't we wait until official news that the Viper is dead? Until FCA gives a press release that says "There will be no more Vipers built, the product has reached the end of it's life", I'm tired of hearing people speculate. I'm glad most of you people aren't running the company or you would have cancelled the car two years ago already. Give them a chance and see what happens. Don't preach their end, wait with baited breath for the next great thing. What's the worst that could happen? If the car is cancelled the car is cancelled. Everyone saying it's over is only giving the company more reason to consider ending it. Look at the NSX. That thing has been in development for 5 years or something like that and people still wait. They haven't given up on it, despite a lack of information. Frankly, I thought the car was over after the 2010 anyway. I never expected them to release another one and I was fine with that back then. What's changed now to make people so fussy?

Now where is SRT (Street & Racing Technology) going to get their Racing Technology.

Believe the Viper will continue on, but I bet someone, and maybe more that one, is thinking about building a mid engine Dodge super car with a HellCat in the bay.

It really is not complicated. SRT, as a brand, was a very small fish in the FCA ocean and was managed by different people with a different budget and a different view of how the Viper should be priced and marketed. That view proved to be incorrect and SRT did not prove to be viable as a separate brand.

The Viper is now back to being a Dodge product. Dodge is a big fish in the FCA ocean. It is headed up by someone who is a very savvy marketer. Look at what has already been done with the Challenger and Charger Hellcats. Also note the level of successful NHRA drag racing activity.

I think you will now see some clever and successful Viper marketing. The first example of this may have been the commercial where the Dukes of Hazzard car is upgraded to a Viper.

Dodge may have realized that the typical Viper buyer is not a "fancy" person with a "euro mind". Based on my experience, the typical Viper buyer is a very "American" maverick type who likes watching Clint Eastwood's earlier movies. So trying to **** the Viper through what is an obscure and little known racing series watched by a few of us but not the general public, although noteworthy, was probably deemed to be a less than optimal marketing decision.

I know what you are saying about the G5 in regards the other gens sales wise and I totally agree on the numbers. But like I've been saying all along its not just the public that have considered it a failure its also corporate since this gen was specifically made to appeal to a greater audience than prior gens and sell x amount of units etc or else. So from that standpoint and the failure of the marketing team is why it appears to be an overall failure.

This time away from racing may be good for the Viper etc because hopefully that now defunct racing budget will go toward a Hellsnake, ACR, Vert and whatever other SRT vehicle they can come up with. To me they have to succeed on this front before they can sustain a racing program alongside the lineup like Porsche/Chevy etc are doing. It doesn't appear Fiat is going to help in the Viper budget dept.

I agree on not being premature in sounding the death knell for the Viper. The TA 2.0 worries me that their wont be an ACR so they put this together instead but none of us knows for sure.

Playing with the race cars if a Dodge is hardly selling their new generation car is out of the question.Of course,it is a money thing.I mean would you do this if it was your cash,no way...I like, others would like to give the benefit of the doubt to Dodge to update the Gen 5 so people will buy it. So,we shall see if they actually do it.They need a big improvement for the 2015 model, not 16,it will be to late then..

More HP than Hellcat for sure,DCT Trans ,Factory Convertible,Drag Pack and a ********* track rat model.... NOT COLORS and 5 HP.....

Spin as one will, this is it will play out...

I agree, Porsche spends tons of money on technology, and it shows, there Turbo S is not that much slower on the track as a Camaro, they have come a long way. I am not a Porsche type guy, but I see the lure in there cars to some.

Porsche Cars /Company has nothing to do with the situation with Dodge Viper and Dodge SRT Motorsports. The example used of Porsche Company and their cars ,is just a example of doing things and building high performance cars that sell and are reliable no mater what they cost.

By the way, the 991 Turbo S destroyed to new Z28 at Laguna Seca and quarter mile drag race recently/all others, except Nismo GTR/Tied(Road and Track). So ,to compare the two is dreaming.
The Gen 5 was absent during these tests....

Motorsports is very important for the development of a car company's future high performance street cars....

I would agree it's been more of a marketing failure than a sales failure, hopefully something that can be worked on with added money that used to be devoted to racing. As seen in numerous reviews, the car is generally very well received and definitely a step up over previous models. They did a good job on the car, but it's just not in the public eye for whatever reason. I got the same infamous question at a gas station the other day "I thought they stopped making those?". With more exposure and better pricing informaiton I think sales would pick up. If the only people that ever see the car are ones going to the dealership, they'd think the price is $140k+ since those are the only cars at dealerships most of the time. Some good advertisement with "prices starting at $80k" or whatever the number is seems like it would do worlds of good for getting people interested in the car. Don't get me wrong, that's still big money for a car, but when people see what they get for that money and what it costs to get that from other companies I think many would come around to the Viper side.
