Does Anyone\'s Gas Gauge Fluctuate A Lot?

Hey everyone. I just had a quick question for the owners. Just got my car a few weeks ago and I noticed that the gas gauge fluctuates a lot. I noticed it at around 1/4 tank. When I accelerated it went down to zero and freaked me out but once you are going at a steady pace it leveled out to 1/4 again. Anyone have this problem or had this problem? Is there anyway to fix this?

Thanks in advance

Mine fluxuates from FULL to EMPTY to FULL around every 200 miles, but then I can explain it.

I think it's normal evertime I would fill up my RT/10's there always seemed to be like 4 gals. left in the tank. I think they wanted to make sure people did not run out of fuel, after all four gals. will only take you about 10 miles(J/K). That's just the way the gauges are, at least mine.

I figured it was because it was an american car as well. That is what I am assuming until someone can prove it to me otherwise.

That really stinks because I will never know when it is REALLY empty until I am on the side of the road. I will just have to fill up everytime at a 1/4 I guess.

My 97 is empty when it reads about 1/3.

My 98 still has about 3+ gallons on 'E'.

You're tank holds about 18 gallons. You'll figure it out.

Same thing here - pretty stable until it hits the 1/4 mark and then it will swing around like a pendulum.

Easy fix - fill it at the 1/4 mark. :)

Re: Does Anyone\'s Gas Gauge Fluctuate A Lot?

Mine also does that... like Chuck said, you'll figure it out. I can get about 130 miles per fill-up with occasional strong acceleration runs. Highway gets more around 200 miles.

Keep an eye on how much gas you put in... it seems that on empty, I can only put in about 15 gallons (meaning I have 3 left). I wouldn't push the car too much with under 1/4 tank. I've had to drive out and bring my buddy some fuel when his Viper ran out of gas in the city. His was a 97 GTS...

Wow, And I allways thought it was just my car... I fill when the pointer is at
12 oclock... and it takes about 12 gallons. Don't ever want to run out of gas.

Re: Does Anyone\'s Gas Gauge Fluctuate A Lot?

Ok glad to hear that it is not just me. I will just fill up at a 1/4 tank. It seems to be the easiest and that is what I have been doing since I got the car anyway. Has anyone ever run out of gas because of this?

Re: Does Anyone\'s Gas Gauge Fluctuate A Lot?

Just out for a ride today in the SRT waited for the gas lite to come on, and it did. Then I drove another 10-12miles to my local filling station, and the tank in this car is the same way. Got to 14.3gals and the pump stopped! So there is a 4 gal. "reserve".

You would think that the problem would have been solved in the SRT for sure but once again Dodge did not address it. That really stinks. Oh well. What can we do but still love the cars. LOL! :D

Re: Does Anyone\'s Gas Gauge Fluctuate A Lot?

not really a prob. in a car that potentially gets 9-10 mpg leaving 4 gals as a reserve is prob. not so dumb. The gauge would not fluctuate that much, have not paid attn to see if this one has same fluctuation. The SRT is a Great car, I love it.
