Does the K&N intake actually do anything?

I have read conflicting reports regarding the functionality of the K&N intake system for our cars. Can anyone that has actually installed one opine please? Better yet, does anyone have dyno #'s to support K&N's claims?

From what I have seen with other cars in the past, intakes usually offer nothing more than an aggressive sound.

Thanks,
Andrew

I'm wondering the same thing. I have the Corsa Track on my 04, but want to add the K&N - only if it really does anything. Car already has a great sound, so I'm looking more at performance/cooling issues.

A guy in the GA-VCA has an 06' SRT w/ Corsa exhaust. He added a K&N intake system and he also picked up a double digit RWHP gain (can't remember how much exactly, but def more than 10, less than 20)

I heard that the stock airbox isn't that bad and that replacing the stock paper filters with Green's basically provides similar gains.

:dunno:

If I recall correctly, Sean Roe has some useful info on this subject (but I don't recall what it was).

They are good for more horsepower but they are hard to feel because it's not a lot. I think they show more value as more mods are done.

There was a story on speed channel today going over K&N filters, perfect for this post. Since
day one of muscle cars the number 1 mode was performance air filters. YES they do provide
more horsepower.

These used to be an old saying among us old put out to pasture hot rodders. To add HP it has to be able to breath and fart! Changing the factory air intake and exhaust does wonders for HP, Torque, and drivabilty! See our website for some ideas and numbers on just what each upgrade can provide in terms of the above.

doesn't make a damn bit of difference what is was designed for because the one advantage that this type of element has over paper is greatly reduced air flow restriction; however, poor filtration efficiency is the price you pay. BUT any smart man's first inclination would be to think like u have

20 hp gain with K&N corsa and hi flow cats. I think the K&N will get you 10-14 hp.

spend the money for 50 hp and get the mopar exhaust, another 25 for the computer that has yet to hit the shelves? wait for some of the really good computer tuners to get to it and i think we will see some REAL gains (all for off-raod purposes of course :D)
variable cam timing and stuff will be really fun to toy with

The K&N air filter elements will show a gain in HP over stock factory air filters for 1992-2006 Vipers. I have seen mixed reviews on if buying the whole air cleaner assembly shows any additional again or how much over just the filters. We had a TECH Day with the Chrysler Engineer that does all the dyno work and calibrations for Viper and he stated, for the 2008 engine "Chrysler" did their homework on the airfilter and aircleaner intake system and said for us to save our money on buying anyones elses.

Sources tell me that an air filter change in a 2008 is worth 6hp. For reduced filtration and non-OEM issues, I will probably pass, but I am interested in any verfied gains others have experienced.

In an earlier reply, Chad, our GA-VCA President, posted the following:"A guy in the GA-VCA has an 06' SRT w/ Corsa exhaust. He added a K&N intake system and he also picked up a double digit RWHP gain (can't remember how much exactly, but def more than 10, less than 20)"

I am that guy and here are the facts. All of the following are RWHP and certified by DYNOLAB of Marietta, GA. My 2006 SRT-10 in stock condition produced 430 RWHP. I added the Corsa exhaust and produced 447 RWHP,a 17 RWHP increase. I then added the K&N Air Charger and produced 461 RWHP, 14 RWHP increase. For the relatively small amount of cost for the K&N, it has to be one of the best deals in town for a 3%+ RWHP increase. BTW, according to the K&N tech I spoke with, the owner of K&N is a Jerry Mall, who owns several Vipers and would not allow his company to sell a Viper accessory that did not produce.

I hope this helps.

k&n's last forever, or a million miles as they say. You have to clean them, I think every 6 months is good. I swear by them I have them in about 15 of my vehicles right now.

Cleanings need to be done according to the hp and eviroment they're used in. I live down a gravel road and need more cleanings. I also have a lot more hp than stock and that's another reason to clean the filters sooner.
