Do you have any recommendations to reduce the sound level which is at 92 db at highway speeds?

The exhaust sounds great, but my better half will not ride in the car any longer. Don’t say it, I already know what you are thinking!

Here is what I have on my 94 rt/10:
> Tube headers from a 2000 Viper;
> Random Technology high flow cats;
> Belanger cat back system which has Dynomax (straight through) mufflers.

Here are some of the solutions that have been offered:
> Use Ted May's "auger" between the cat and muffler, which I am going to do;
> Tunable (Power Effects) mufflers. This would require cutting a big hole in the underside of the sidesill to be able to adjust the sound level, not what I want to do.
> Put the original cats back on after cutting each end so they have 3" openings and fab back into the system. The Random cats weigh much less and run way cooler. I would hate to go backwards.

Any and all recommendations are welcome!

Thanks, tw

Thanks, I purchased five different types of ear plugs for the right seat. That did not turn out to be an acceptable solution I am sorry to say.

Any other recommendations?

Good points. For me 5th seems to be quieter. Higher pitch vs the rumble of 6th. Going up through the gears is ok, it's 92db at 70mph on trips that gets my better half.

I tooks cats of my 94 and replaced with the Dynomax mufflers (one on each side) Wayyyyy to loud , so I welded another muffler to each side and it is perfect now! I have read other posts that these cars have a "sweet spot" and really resonate in top gear between 60-70 MPH. I have not drove mine since on the highway since I put the exhaust on.

Look into SuperFlow mufflers. They have "plates" on the end to tune the noise/backpressure. More waffley plates means less backpressure and more noise, and fewer plates means less noise, more backpressure. Had them on a number of cars, even with a more quiet setting, still way more top end end power than other mufflers.

Now the hard part - you have to make something for the sidepipe turn out. I used two mudguards (search through Summit or their website for parts) made by SuperFlow open end to open end, then a turn out to match the side sill opening. From out side, looks stock. Muffler is 6" diameter, so it fits. It took away 85% of the resonance from the Hennessey straight through mufflers that were on the car, and I have the maximum number of plates on the mufflers. Not annoying, and for the better half, "only a little loud."

I have some pix and drawings I can email.

Call Corsa and see if they will just sell you the 2 side mufflers w/o the rear sub-section. I have no idea how much one muffler will sound but the Corsa mufflers will work better than any other type for reducing sound and drone.

You could try 3 other mufflers, I've tried them all

1. Jegs.com p/n 289-17223 DynoMax 6" round $70 each does a good job at sound reduction but does have some drone spikes

2. Jegs.com p/n 157-40085 Borla XR1 5" round $150 each cuts down the noise a bit better than the DynoMax but not dramatically. Also has drone spikes but not as bad as the DynoMax

3. Tunable power effects $500 - as loud as the Borla when closed and like a 4" DynoMax when open. Drone is reduced quite a lot but it's still there.

All of these were on my GTS so I don't know exactly how it will sound on your sidepipe RT/10

Sounds like I should give Summit and Jeg's a call. Any other recommendations from others? This is a good start!

thanks, tw

My current setup:

Balenger Headers
Dynomax bullet muffler (mounted to front of cat)
Roe elliptical cats
3" all the way

Loud under acceleration, however, very tolerable at highway speeds. The exhausts are for sale - could solve your problem. Dyno's at 405 hp.

Thanks to all who took the time to reply!

Her is the combo I am going to try.
> Auger (from Ted May through PartsRack) between cat and muffler;
> Dynatech Vortex Insert Cones from Jeg's at Sean Roe's recommendation.

I will (my right seater) let you how this combo turns out!

Other options that were on the Jeg's site that might be a future mod if the above does not work are:
> Borla XR-1 Sportsman Race Muffler;
> Moroso Spiral Flow Muffler (has auger already inside; and
> CC Collector Insert, not an auger, but an insert that is tunable to some degree.

thanks, tw
