I'm thinking about installing a flip-up/out touch-screen head unit in my 96 GTS.

Has anyone had any experience installing one of these type of units in their Vipers?

The only thing that i'm concerned about is once the unit is flipped up that it would be in the way to adjust the heating/ac controls.

Has anyone ever flip-flopped their dashes so that the head unit is on top instead of underneath the heating/ac controls? Would this be a hard thing to do?

You actually made me second guess whether or not the radio is above the HVAC controls. I guess winter has been too long for me. The radio is already above the controls. I have a buddy who has had various flip units installed. Getting to the HVAC controls is not too bad an issue, when the screen is flipped up it does block the vents though.

Well then I guess the previous owner of my Viper didn't like the controls where they are...because MINE are on TOP of my radio...Nothing looks out of the ordinary on my dash so I just assumed it was factory...However he did it...he did a damn good job at making it look legit.

Didn't the Gen I have the center console flipped in comparison to the Gen II?

I think that's correct. The Gen I Vipers had the stereo under the HVAC controls.

Fatboy 18....Do you happen to know what kind of camera unit you have? I was thinking about installing the same thing. Was yours wired or wireless?

Was going to be one of my next mods.

Don't go cheap on these, but $800 will get you a name brand with all the bells and whistles. If you get the one with the Iphone app controls built in you can control your Iphone apps from your head unit so having NAV isn't much of a concern.

Blainne....do you know if there are any units that do the same thing to be able to control the apps from the screen but for Android...I used to have the IPhone but I like Android better now.

I had one in my gen 3 when I bought it but ended up yanking it for a more traditional unit. The main gripe I had was that it pretty much covered the whole air vents when up, but you pretty much had to have it up to do anything. There were very limited controls with the screen down. Granted, the vents on the gen 2 don't seem to get blocked as bad and a newer head unit might offer better controls. Mine was several years old and showing its age for sure.

I use the Flip-out in both Gen II and III. They do block some of the flowing air from the vents although the air flows around them well, and I'm in Florida so our weather does get very hot. You can adjust the screen flap up and down or even the backset. If you just entered the car and it's hot, just tap a button and close the flap until the desired temp is reached- the radio will work in either direction.

I truly like the Flip for the big screen advantages!

My camera is a very small cube, its wired and sits between the Autoform rear diffuser and bumper, it has a small bracket which is held in place by 3m double sided sticky pad

I'm not sure. I imagine there should be since there are so many Android users.

I'm not a fan because it blocks vents. It seems like in the summer, AC condensation could become an issue.
There really is no issue. If you really need a massive blast through the vents just return the motorised screen, everything works fine without it ;)

I have my rear view camera switched so that it works whenever I want it, its great for passengers to see what's behind us on track days :)

John I did the same thing... I was like damn I thought the radio was above the AC controls. LOL.

I actually put a head unit my mine recently and I pondered the same question but came to the ultimate conclusion that I did not want to block my A/C vents. The vipers already have poor A/C and not having direct air blowing would just exacerbate an already rough problem living in central texas (damn hot down here in the summer). Aside from that, I figured I didn't need the further distraction.

As I said I basically decided against it before ever looking into it, but I would definitely say to check the depth on any flip out unit you plan on using. The mounting is already pretty shallow on the viper. Ideally even plug ports on the back would benefit from elbow connectors since there is pretty close to no space left at the back of the unit once installed. You can fit short RCA connectors at the back, but you really have to mash it in there so again mounting depth is something you REALLY have to consider if you choose the flip out.
