For those who put a 08+ hood on a gen 3

I'm putting a gen IV hood on my 04 and I'm getting conflicting estimates from local painters. Some state the fenders will have to blended since the car is bright silver in color and others say they can just do the hood. Which is right?

I think it all depends on who you ask. I've heard the same thing, that the fenders would have to be done as well to blend with the hood. I suppose that a good paint shop might be able to just do the hood.

Actually both may be right. I had an 08 hood put on my 06. It is bright red. The auto painter, and I used a high end guy that does very expensive cars, advised me that after painting the hood, the quarter panels may have to be blended, or may not. It of course depended on how well the hood matched the panels and depending on whether the panels had faded at all. As it turned out they didnt need to be blended. Have the hood painted, look at it from all angles. If it is painted correctly, odds are your panels will not need to be blended.

Of all the SRT colors out now, Bright Silver and Copperhead will likley need blending, age-sun-fade matters. SSG will be a bugger, and so will ToxicOrange.

Especially on a metallic paint hood that gets HEAT CYCLED every drive, and has direct sun all day.

How many 04 vipers garage queens have paint fade allready? Not likely. I had a white SS Elcamino. I sprayed and clear coated. After a while I resprayed the nose from chips with out the clear just enamel. It wasnt even close to matching the car had faded so much. I took a piece off the car brought to paint house. They matched the paint. Gave me a new quart I resprayed and it match perfect. That was about 12 years ago. I find it hard to believe they cant do that today. If they pull just the paint code and spray it maybe it will not match who knows but they should spray a test piece to see if the code still matches. Yes you will have to pay for additional paint no big deal. I am no paint and body guy but I have sprayed about 4 cars. Just my 2cents. I would see if a paint shop has the tech to capture the color off of the fender and match it. Just my 2 cents.

Metallic colors should be blended at the same time as the main part you are trying to paint because of the variables (like air pressure, angles, humidity) that effect the color that may not be duplicated at a different time, solid colors can be blended afterwords as long as you have the same batch of paint.
It is very tough to panel paint but not imposible it all depends on the color and the tech doing the work.

if its silver its not a big deal to scuff the fenders,blend the tops,clear it- thats what i would do cause there is a chance just painting the hood it will look funny- but maybe not- safe way is to blend(a very simple light duty process)

As you can see, my Mamba is White and I had the 08 hood painted using the exact paint code. I did not have to have any blending done. I guess I was lucky with mine....Good Luck!

Put an 08' Hood on my 06 GTS Blue Coupe with Silver Stripes and only painted the hood, no blending. The key is to match the paint to the front ground effects area (by the Viper logo) just below the hood and in bright sunlight. Most likely that is the majority of time you drive it anyway, or when I drive mine.

In sunlight, my hood looks just fine as with metallic paint and all the angles on the fenders, it is hard to tell as the metallic factory paint throws diffrent shades all by itself. In the shade or out of sunlight, you can tell it is slightly different. Of course, 99% of the people can not tell even when I point it out, but then again, I am anal.

In the end, it just comes down to your level of tolerance. I like the idea I can put the old hood back on and it will still match perfectly. 6 one way, 1/2 a dozen the other.

Put an 08 hood on my 06 FE coupe. No fender blending needed. Hood looks great. Chris' Collision in East Orange NJ did the work.

Blend paint on a Viper? Would any of you buy a used Viper that shows evidence (painted fasteners, tape lines, etc.) of paint blending or feathering? Didn't think so. Body panels are painted individuallly and then assembled at the factory. Paint matching shouldn't be an issue anyway because 99% of a all Vipers aren't continuously exposed to the elements.

I have an '08 OE hood sitting in my garage awaiting a paint job. Rest assured, it and only it will be delivered to the paint shop.

I did a vipair hood on my 03. They said not only do you not blend, but they prepped & painted it off the car. Matches perfectly, but my car is black. Still costed me plenty though, as the vipair needed ample prep work.

What's wrong with the '06 Hood? Yes i know the 08 cools a bit better but i like to keep it original over such minor improvements. Leave the '08 hoods for the '08's.

No. I think the same way. No way to put a later hood on an earlier car destroying the originality and repainting (front and fenders) for no real reason.

The "real reason" is that some of us like the look and function of the '08 - '09 hood design just like some prefer other add-ons (exhaust, wheels, interior trim, etc.). Originality can be restored by keeping and re-installing the original hood. Paint is not an issue as long as it is restricted to the hood and done professionally.

A good shop will not need to blend onto fenders. I simply dropped off my '06 hood along with the new '08 hood to the paint shop. He was able to match the color and the stripe location, based on the '06 hood being there.

I think you are making too much of it. Do your homework on the body shop, and don't cheap out on the paint job. Payed $850 for hood prep, paint and install on my car. Maybe more than other places, but other than myself, no one else has even questioned that it did not come on the car from the factory. Like I said, depends on your level of tolerance.

thay make a spray now that dries to a thin clear skin,and then removes with water and turns to a sudsey soap look.
