from a vette to a viper, who\'s done it ?

I'm considering the move.you guys that have made the switch-what are some of the pros and cons?...one of the cons i've noticed is that you guys don't drive your cars,i like to drive my weekend car about 8k a year-that would be a high mileage car judging by what i've seen in the classifieds...anyway,any input?...dave

Re: from a vette to a viper, who\'s done it ?

Can't speak for the others, but I went from a Corvette to Viper and still kept the Vette. Two different beasts. As far as milage goes I don't understand the low milage thing. I think if you like a car and want to drive it, then drive it!! There has been no isues with mine (except little things) over 40K miles in 4 years. Still strong and pounding most I come across. Maybe people don't drive them a lot because it isn't a good grocery getter but either is the Vette.
Don't worry about other's and low milage Vipers. I would bet there are more high milage ones out there but you don't see them for sale because the same owner is still driving it!!
Get one and enjoy...I'm outta here. have a good weekend, ALL!!!

I went backwards. I got my Viper first and then got the Z06 for my daily driver.

Re: from a vette to a viper, who\'s done it ?

I switched from a Z06 to a GTS this past spring and have been loving it ever since. I drive the car about as much as you are expecting to. The way I look at it, what good is owning a car like the Viper if you don't ENJOY it. I think if you look around you'll find quite a few people who drive their Viper even more than you are expecting to, I know I would if I had more time.

Anyway, for the pros and cons, the Viper gets WAY more attention than a Vette ever could. And I can speak from experience when I say the Viper is faster than the Z06 (stock vs. stock). The Viper is without a doubt a better performance car than the Vette.

The Vette has the "creature comforts" that the Viper lacks (climate control, power everything, better stereo, etc.). It also has a traction control and active handling, not to mention it gets better gas mileage, all of which tends to make the Vette a better daily commuter.

All I can say is when I picked up my Z06 I had a smile from ear to ear. When I traded it for GTS I realized that what I had previously believed to be a smile was really only a grin!!!

Re: from a vette to a viper, who\'s done it ?

My story may be a little different. I went from a vette I felt I couldn't drive to something I drive all the time(Viper). I had a Callaway TT. Over the years its real value surfaced(it mostly depreciated) but I didn't want to put any miles on it because of its rarity. I love going *******(convertible) so I bought a 2000 Vette convertible. Then for the same amount of out of pocket expense, I bought my 96 RT/10. No regrets whatsoever. The creature comforts of the vette is nice but it doesn't outweigh the amount of fun I get out of my viper. I put about 7-8k Miles a year on mine. So I say go for it and don't worry about the mileage.

Traded '99 C5 for my '00 RT...caved to the HP gods, the mind blowing torque, and that big smile that went away after about a year in the vette is back...

Do it! I did and I don't regret it at all. I think the viper has become the next step for a LOT of C5 Vette guys. It's almost like the Vette is a set of training wheels. The Viper is less comfortable indeed, but for a weekend driver it can't be beat.

Re: from a vette to a viper, who\'s done it ?

Just consider the Viper a high production Kit Car and you will be happy.

I went from the Vette to the Viper.

Things better in the Vette:
Sound System
AC and Heat
Comfort
Ground clearance
Your feet are not on Fire
Parts are less expensive
Fit and finish is better

Things better in a Viper
Everyone has a Vette, Viper gets lots of looks
Viper is faster
Viper is an exotic, boys dream car
A lot more fun to drive
More of a "race" car compared to the Vette

Would I go back to the Vette? NO, Well maybe to save some money and use it as a daily driver. Wait...some of us are buying the new Vette, I think they call the **** the SRT10.

Re: from a vette to a viper, who\'s done it ?

Guilty here, did the vette switch too! i went from a 96 Grand Sport (#872) to the Viper. Only drove it on weekends and such, but with this car, im trying to come with excuses just to take it out! I was actually very close to getting an '02 z06, but the WOW factor of the Viper absolutely cant be beat. Just filling up at the gas station or being stopped at a light is a major production. The first time i filled up, i had about 6 people circling the car while i pumped the gas. Pretty cool
smile.gif
Z06 is a fine car too, but way too many C5's out there. Someday though, i hope to be like Performin' Norman
smile.gif
No brainer..get one, you wont regret it

Splain??? Why splain? It's easier to ask for forgiveness then to ask for permission. Go for it! You'll be glad you did.

Ledfoot, you're asking the wrong question. Ask someone in the bay area to give you and the missus a ride, once she's been in the car you won't have to do any more "splainin". Actually if she hasn't seen one in person that might do it. Come on you left coasters, help this guy out!

Re: from a vette to a viper, who\'s done it ?

92 corvette convertible to 94 viper rt/10 , i love the viper way better for what i wanted it for. The corvette is probably the better overall car for everyday driving, especially when the sudden rainstorm comes up
smile.gif
But i would never go back to the corvette after having the viper, much more attention, runs much better, and you dont pass yourself 100 times a day, i think you would be happy with the switch.

Re: from a vette to a viper, who\'s done it ?

I still have my 2000 C5 Coupe. I also have a 2001 GTS. Not usual, but the Viper is my daily driver. Over 22,000 miles in 9 months.
supergrin.gif

The Viper gets a lot of attention. It might be hard to explain to your wife. You get cute women writing phone numbers on their windows to get you to call them.
blush.gif
I would like to think that it's me, but it has not happened with my C5.
shake.gif

The Viper is actually kinda comfortable. The only thing is the heat in the foot wells. It's also a little harder to get into than the C5, but that much better for female passengers wearing skirts.
supergrin.gif
Oh, I forgot, you need to explain to your wife...

When you are ready, call Bill P. at Woodhouse (800)889-1893. Only when you are ready though because he is going to somehow make you buy one. That's what happened to me.

Re: from a vette to a viper, who\'s done it ?

I had a beautiful Mustang convertible, but when I thought of all the things that I wanted to do to the car to improve it's performance and handling, I ended up buying a Corvette convertible. It was also a beautiful car, but then whe I got a chance to get a Viper, both the Mustang and Vette were sold in 6 months.

The Mustang was the most practical with (tight fitting) back seats, a spaceous trunk, decent gas mileage and cheap parts.

But even in performance red with a white top, it was almost invisible on the road, being sporty but more common.

The Vette was obviously designed more for performance, and could go quicker in a straight line or around corners much faster than the Stang, with less effort. I had a '94 Vette, so it had no trunk, but it was a quick car and quite enjoyable to drive.

As much as I liked my Mustang and Corvette, the Viper is another animal entirely.

It was odd getting used to the V10 sound/feel, but I added Sean Roe high-flow cats, and a Corsa cat-back exhaust and it sounds great now.

There is an instant celebrity status that you get by owning/driving in this car. For instance I had two separate people today say "nice car" when they saw me get into the Viper to drive off.

Kids scream and point, and adults alternately smile/wave, or try to look disinterested as you pass beside them.
My wife says that she feels like we are in a parade.
So the "bottled fame" is good and bad. I do feel a bit more worried leaving it unattended than my previous cars.

The inside of the Viper feels less spaceous than my Vette. More like an airplane cockpit with a less raked windshield and with the dash more upright and closer. The pedals are slightly to the left. The clutch is a bit stiffer, there's no dead pedal, no cruise, ASR or ABS (on mine), and a slightly harsher ride than the Vette.

As much as the Vette parts were a big jump over the Mustang parts, for mods and maintenance. The Viper parts are a huge jump up again. It's a bit of a shock to hear that the hood sells for $17K and the side sills are $4400 from the dealer.

Mods prices range from "only" $125 for smooth tubes and K&N filters, to $5,000 for shock, tire/wheel, or brake upgrades. $4,500 for ported/polished heads with roller rockers, compared to $1400 for the same thing for the Vette, and $500 for the Mustang.

Insurance coverage was the same price surprisingly.
supergrin.gif

As far as driving mileage goes, I've already decided that I'm just going to drive the car normally and not sweat the miles. I've enjoyed the experience of every drive so far, and now the car is my daily driver with no regrets.

For me it is like realizing a dream, like seeing a special exotic show car that you've drooled over for years, but then actually getting to drive it around anywhere that pleases you, and taking it home as your very own. It's NOT a car for everyone. But for what it's designed to do, it excells.

I made the switch. I had a 2000 C5. What a great move! 8K a year isn't bad if you enjoy it. Weigh the $ vs. the pleasure factor. If you get your money's worth, then it's worth it. Who cares about your milage. Enjoy your snake! But definately get one, it is worth it.

Re: from a vette to a viper, who\'s done it ?

I forgot to add that believe it or not I actually saved money going to the viper
eek.gif

My insurance is half of what I was paying for on the Vette. No limitations and same deductible. Go figure you say. I asked my insurance agent the same thing. Not that I was complaining of course but what's the catch. They both had the same amount of value(2000C5 vs 1996RT10). Besides the year difference it had something to do with what he called claims per vehicle. There is a BUNCH of Vettes getting wrecked or stolen. There simply is not that many Vipers getting wrecked or stolen. I know there is a production difference in the two but it seems the insurance company(at least the one I have) don't recognize it. So I'm saving over a grand a year. What else can you ask for. Go for it!

Re: from a vette to a viper, who\'s done it ?

Went from leased 99 C5 coupe to creampuff ACR (bought). Got tired of watching C5 values drop like a rock whent the latest and greatest Vette was anounced each yr. Decided not to wait for the Z06 as the lease came to and end. Was extremely lucky to have a wife insist that I get the Viper so that I would stop bitchin and moanin about GM's tendency to devalue it's current cars by introducing models just a little bit better than the one you own.
Each drive in the ACR is a treat. C5 became just like my Z28 - an everyday mode of transportation.

I own an 01 Z06 and a 99 GTS. If I could only own one of he cars it would be the Viper, without hesitation. The Viper is just more pure fun then the Vette.

Re: from a vette to a viper, who\'s done it ?

Had a few Vettes... still have one.

Overall the Viper is the better car. What do you like about the Vette? The power? the handling? driving a car that gets oohs an aahs? If you like these about the Vette, the Viper is that times 10,000.

If you want something to drive every day and this will be your only car, and price is important, and 90% of your driving is just errands and going to and from work, the Viper might not be better for you.

If you consider these cars fun toys - the Viper is in a different league than the Vette. As a daily driver, you'd have to really love the Viper to prefer it to a Vette. But why would you have cars like these as daily drivers??

If you got the bling bling, might think about the SRT - fastest Viper ever - real convertible... look at these guys quaking in their boots about it!

had the Vette, bought the Viper, kept them both for a while, the vette (even though faster than the Viper) is on the market. I guess that speaks for itself.

I still have my C5 but it will soon go. I just have a hard time getting myself to sell it because I really do love it. The cars are very different. I'm very fortunate to be able to experience both cars
