Fuel filter surgery ...

What's up with the upper so called "quick" connect fitting on the fuel filter ?
I am not the only one having lost an hour.
I had so much difficulty to disconnect that upper fitting ...

Have a look on these pictures below. I had to open the fender to access the fuel filter. Then I cut out the quick connect fitting like a can.

That's nothing. To reconnect the new filter it was as difficult as to disconnect it. For some reason the plastic tube is too tight. I ended up using some vaselin to push the plastic tube into the fitting.

Schulman I had the same problem removing the so called Quick Disconnect at the firewall, during the S/C install. The special release tool was used without success.

Removed the plastic part from the connector then used a tool designed for Ford fuel connectors. Released without any difficulty. Rick

I think the issue is that the fuel line is made of some sort of cheap plastic (made in Kazakstan) instead of being of stainless steel. This is the reason why it is so difficult to disconnect it.

Man, what a hassle, sorry to hear all this as I just took my 99 gts to my quick lube place that changes my oil and brought the new fuel filter to him. 5 minutes later (but with his arm all full of fuel) the job was done. $20.00 labor fee. Hope the next one is easier.

Schulman:

the filter has to be brought toward the fitting (move the two lines together), otherwise the pressure dosen't allow the clips to release.

I had this problem. I had to basically break the black plastic fitting to get it out.

Had a heck of a time replacing mine last fall. Then the fuel line and filter parted company one day in a local (thank God) parking lot, spraying gas every where. Had to flatbed the car to a dealer,who replaced the offending filter with a new one, with no problem (that is except for the usual gas down the arm. I was told the filter I used was defective! Moral: Don't leave town till you are sure your clips will hold or your in for a tow.

Your bad experience remembered me to change the Fuel Filter in my 97 GTS (34000mls)...

I raised the car and... it took me less than 10 minutes.

No problems, disconnected easily by hand...

I was surprised, because i drive the car in rain sometimes and the Filter looked not very good.

Lucky me! ;-)
