Garage Flooring ..

I have read alot of the msgs here concerning new garage flooring. There seems to be alot of postive feed back on RaceDeck or similiar snap in flooring. I am in the finishing stages of completing my 3 car garage and am ready for flooring.

I had a company come out for quote named http://www.grtrestoration.com/garage_floor_coating_and_concrete_coatings.html in maryland.

They are claiming they use a ploymere based solution that is harder then epoxy and offers lifetime warrenty. This solution is about 700 bucks (professioanlly done for both) more then a racedeck type solution.

Does anyone have any experience with this type of epoxy flooring. i am going to be in this house for about 20 years so lifetime warrenty is very appealing for 700 more then platic tiles.

I've been doing industrial construction for over 25 years. The only flooring system that will last in industrial use is a troweled on system (1/4" thick, not a painted coating) like Stonehard. You're probably looking at thousands of $$$. But it will actually last forever. The place that is offering you a lifetime warranty, will they still be in business in 20 years? You make the call. On a more positive note, the painted on systems if subjected to only soft vehicle tires and minimal mechanical abuse will likely do OK. So my floor is bare concrete on that note. I don't want to baby the floor, nor spend thousands on the real stuff.

Expoxy/Polymer flooring lasts forever if the surfaced is properly prepped. I'm in the process of having my garage floor concrete shot-blasted before applying the epoxy. If shot-blasting is not in the budget see if they'll will etch the floor with muriatic acid. The concrete needs to be pourous so it can absorb the expoxy for proper adhesion. Otherwise, the paint will lift off in no time.

bought the race deck and set it up. it feels cheap and makes tons of noise when you walk on it. looks like and feels like pvc plastic, not even a bit soft. bought it at costco then returned it. most people who install it say nothing negative because they own it already and return is almost impossible.

looks to be a maintenance nightmare as it has some space between each piece, a perfect place to get animal hair stuck in etc.....
just completed my floors with advance coatings. it's drying as we speak!

I don't have RaceDeck I just know the guy that invented it. I also prefer just plain ol' smooth concrete like Dave6666.

I do have two golden retrievers and plenty of dog hair everywhere. This is all great information guys. I am seriouly leaning towards the poly solution. I visited a Washington Redskins player house Shawn Springs. He has this flooring and looks awesome !

blackviper Do you really drive your 06 daily without regards to milage? If so HOW Sweet is that ! I have put over 400 miles on mine (03) driving no where in the past month and cringe as the odometer creeps next to 10000.

I did mine with UCoatIt. Prep was the hardest part on a 5 y/o garage floor but I love the finish.
Oh, and disregard the vette. It's the wifes.

I can DEFINATELY tell you take care of your stuff. Notice the mats under each tire. Beautiful Garage !!

I had a company come out and put down the epoxy coating and some cabinets in my garage about two years ago. Daily traffic from some very hot Arizona tires, metal wheeled floor jack dragged around once in a while, not a scratch or chip yet. I paid extra to have them do a couple coats of clearcoat as well, its nice and shiny. I hose it out once a month and then squeegee it off, looks like new each time no matter what I spill on it. They painted up the concrete stems on the sides and about a 1/2 inch up the cabinets to make it water tight. I'm pretty happy.

it's easy to drive it daily. i'm about 8 miles round trip each day 4996 miles as of today. it goes from the snake pit to the showroom and almost never parks outside in the daylight. i'm looking forward to my new coupe, as its almost to hot to drive in the convertible in the hot summer sun. i refuse to put up the top. eldon are you hitting the sunol event in September? we hope to see you there.

Not a great picture but I have had pretty good success with an epoxy coating. Professionally installed including sanding/shot peening of concrete before application. Had it for a few years now with no lifting. Just mopping with some diluted simple green makes it look like new. Added benefit is that lighter color (grey with blue white and grey flecks) reflects light making garage work lighting brighter:

I used "ucoatit" 3-4 years ago and it has held up perfect. I went with grey and threw the black, white and grey flecks into it. I like the black, but grey hides a lot of dirt for me in Michigan winters. Mine looks just like the grey in the first page of this link:

I prepped with muriatic acid as recommended. The first coats are water based and you mist the floor with water , roll on the paint and the paint seeps in and bonds to the concrete. I also bought their crack filler which has flex, and cut out the tar strips, ground the edges, primed and filled all seams and cracks before painting. Once you are done with the first couple coats you apply the two part clear. By now you think this **** is safe. WRONG, the 2 part epoxy coating gets wicked, have your breathing device on...not in the far corner of the garage where you can't get it like i did. The fumes were so strong you could smell it 2 houses away.

However, that being said, I dropped a pipe out of the attic and couldn't find the mark on the floor where it hit. The only damage I"ve sustained is where my kids decided to "grind" their skate boards on the lip of the raised walkway. We put an end to that real fast.

Brake fluid, hot tires, brake cleaner..nothing has touched the finish except where the ramps for my revolution lift slide..they scratched the finish. Grit stuck in the plastic sliding edge of the ramps and as the lift comes down it scratched so I put clear plastic runner from Uhaul down where they hit and periodically replace it.

The ucoat it is very good, not cheap, but very good product! In my opinion much, much better than anything you can buy at home depot.

Oh, don't forget to throw the silica into any walk way, and even then I'll bet you wind up on your ass at least once when you walk out in bare feet and don't keep your weight centered. I wind up putting down a runner from costco, rubber shelf covering in an x pattern type of thing, that allows the family to walk on the walkway without always having to worry about going on their backside. Then just discard and put down new next winter.

I have the "real" Race Deck 18" x 18" floors, two colors, yellow and alloy, checkerboard design. I love them, no issues whatsover, everybody notices them when they see my garage. To eliminate the plastic sound, install 30 lbs or 90 lbs roofing felt first.
It looks like a showroom with a finished floor.

WAY to much maintenance (or cautionary behavior) for the ucoat, but sounds very pretty. Yup, luv that smooth bare concrete. Semi pretty, ZERO maintenance...

Serious question though - How do floor jacks work with a Race Deck like product? Seems like a point load on any plastic or rubber would be a nightmare.

You will be pleased. We beat the crap out of it every day with forklift traffic, spill chemicals on it, and smile.
