Hi Guys,

We finally had some time today to really look over a '95 RT/10 and see what it would take to bolt on the SC kit we make for the Gen 2. The only hurdle is the alternator. It's right where the SC drive is. I looked at it for a while, but can't seem to find a good place, or way, to relocate it. I even considered running it off the differential input (standard racer style), but that's not so good if you're stuck in traffic on a hot night. I know you're all a fairly resourceful bunch, so suggestions are welcome. If we can get over that hurdle, we'll build a test kit for somebody (we no longer own a Gen 1 for testing as it became Supercharger parts).

If the alternator is too hard to move or can't be done well, then a twin turbo would be a good option for a Gen 1. Back when we had a '94 RT/10 and the '96 GTS, I had visions of Supercharging the GTS and Twin Turbocharging the RT/10. I think the turbo route could be done reasonably close to the SC kit price (would not have to build a new intake manifold, but would need two turbos). Might be $1,500 to $2,000 more. Just a thought.

If you have any ideas on alternator relocation, drop me an e-mail.

Probably a stupid question, but since the Gen2 had the alternator relocated presumably through different mounting brackets, is it possible to just use stock Gen2 brackets and belts to relocate the alternator on the Gen1 to the Gen2 location or is there more to it than that?

different block design where timing cover attaches to block, gen2 attaches to timing chain cover where gen 1 has its own supporting bracket that would not allow it to attach to gen1.......k.i.s.s-- the two blocks are different designs,

How about removing the ac-compressor, and mount the alternator in that location...? I'm sure it can be done!

i have been doing a little bit of research at home on my free time. there was someone that did supercharge Gen I Vipers in the past. I will look up this information and share it tomarrow. i am curious myself as to whether or not this person/company still exists.

I'm glad you are finally considering doing the Gen I's. We will look at our cars and see about some options on relocating the alternator.

I hope this can be worked out. I won't consider a turbo setup since I'd be out the $2k I spent on headers......

Sean,

I consider myself to be a farily good tinkerer and solver of problems

Can you post pics of the Gen2 blower mounting? head-on shots of the pully system would be best.

Back in the day (waaay back in the day) I ran one of the first ATI blowers in existance for 4th gen F-bodies. I had to have plates machined for the coil relocations and blower mounts. At first, I had the AC system gutted for space, but then I found a better route. ATI used to have the photos from my TA's construction

Here's a picture from when we were doing some fitment testing on a mock up engine. This Gen 2 motor did not have the rest of the pulleys on it, but you can see how we set it up. A Gen 1 support and idler would be built with different dimensions and would not be the problem. Just have to move the alternator. I forgot that some cars didn't have A/C. If I'm going to get serious about it, I guess we need to get a Gen 1 engine in here.

If moving the alternator to an alternate location is too difficult, might a direct drive alternator be adapted to fit on a viper? Some boats have an alternator assembly built into the harmonic balancer while some aircraft have flywheels which also incorporate alternators. Just a suggestion -- I have no idea if this would be more costly than fabricating a custom bracket for the standard alternator. Some links are below:

ok,

i did a little research over the weekend. there used to be a place called McClure Motorsports that supercharged Gen I Vipers. Anyone ever hear of them? the picture in their ad made had the superchager mounted on the passanger side. i think there is a photo in the back of the Winter Viper Magazine, 1997.

anyone know of this, or anyone that owns one???

One of the guys here offered to lend us a Gen 1 motor for setup purposes. We're going to take him up on it, but it will be after the holidays. We've got too much going on between now and then to make any progress.

If you build one for the Gen I. I'll buy one! Nice to see you working on it. I've stuffed a few big blocks in cars that people said they would never fit. I can't say I was the first but I put a 460 in a fox body back in 86. Needless to say it becomes a necessity to be creative. I've seen creativity!

I've always noticed that there is plenty of room between the motor and fan. The only block there is the aluminum crossmember and that small aluminum tube that runs at an angle down to the frame. I'm sure the small tube portion could be removed and the integrity of the car would not be jeopardized. That would free up space for the alternator to be located somewhere down low and on the passenger side. There is no room of course to mount it conventionaly but I think you would be able to turn the alternator around backwards and mount it facing the motor. Of course it has to be a part of the motor(not mounted to the frame) so some kind of remount would be necessary. In the looks dept(we would call this the high tech redneck part)positioned low and under that crossmember it would somewhat hide its unorthodox appearance. The alternator would run backwards but if I recall it doesn't matter what way it turns just as long as it turns.

Another thought I had (I'm working ******* this) would be to mount it(backwards) and to the face of the water pump pulley. Use some sort of urethane spider coupling to drive it directly. There would be some sort of mount of course. This would help in the pulley (added or major belt rerouting) dept. The charger would replace the alternators place. If alternator rotation is a factor this would rotate the alternator in the right direction. The problem here is the crossmember. It could be retrofitted to go higher and around the alternator. It appears the water pump centerline is just below that member.

Hope this gets some ideas rolling. Again glad top see you working on it.
