Gen 2 shifter in a gen1

Just curious if the gen 2 shift lever will fit in a gen1

Should not be a problem. I belive they are all the same '92 to '06, '08.
Doubt there's much advantage if they are both stock.

Thanks. No advantage needed. Just a poser question, bored at the moment, and thought the ball shifter looks better. Does it just screw in? Is the shift boot the same throughout gen1 &2?

You can swap the ball handle for the pseudo pistol grip early handle, no prob. I've done it, and shortened the shaft of the handle at the same time.
The boots are similar, though the hole for the handle shaft is somewhat smaller on the later cars. This will cause the boot to slip down to the jamb nut (if you don't cut a groove for an o-ring, as I did, part way down the shaft.
