I'm thinking I have to remove the interior panel below the steering wheel to get at it but not sure.

This is pathetic, I even found a pic of one and said, "That is easy" but I looked and looked and probed all over the place with my hands.
I didn't realize the port is basically even with the bottom of the trim panel - I thought it was a few inches forward of where it actually is.
So I got a bright, flood beam flashlight (!) and instantly saw it peeking below the bottom of the trim panel.
Anyhow, thanks for the replies and tomorrow I can start diagnosing my codes.
