ACR.... best bet... keep it stock as possible, except
maybe a few things that you can bring the car back to stock
again if need be.... smooth tubes and easy stuff like that

Don't throw out any parts you upgrade...

When the dust settles after the SRT10 comes out, people will
be looking for nice unadulterated GTS's... the ACR is also
a better deal because they cost so much more when new...
The only thing I don't like about the ACR is no fog lamps...
but these can be added if you want ( not a show stopper )
... plus there weren't that many ACR's built with that color combination

Yo REDSLED waaaaassssuuuuup!!!!! The 2000s do NOT have ABS (I should know) but the '00 ACR sounds like the best deal. The 2000 model year was the first with the 10 quart oil pan, I've seen a '97 GTS put 3 holes through the block on the track because of oil starvation. Also with the '00 you don't have to worry about the time consuming 998 recall only the simpler 999 recall, but I am kinda partial to 2000s

beyond my first opinion of thinking having 2 vipers no matter what color is the coolest thing in the world, im kind of partial to the black 99..

my reasoning is that the black w/grey stripes is one of the best color combinations out there.. and i LOVE the 99+ 18 inch wheels.. the only downside is keeping it clean, but those california car dusters do the trick rather nicely.. besides, i think half the fun of owning a viper would be washing it..
smile.gif

as already stated, the ACR is the best deal, but im not a really big fan of the ACR wheels.. they remind me of the 80's trans am wheels.. the color combo is nice, but i prefer darker colors.. if you aren't going to track the car, the acr is just different wheels, tubes and filters, shocks and springs, and a few name badges.. as for resale value, the acr might hold its value a TAD better over time, but are you looking for a car or an investment (i guess resale value could be a small perk)? but hey, its a 2000 ACR.. late model and low mileage.. a definite contender..

blue w/ white stripes.. a definite viper classic.. you get the non creampuff cam with the lumpy idle.. tnt 555 package.. if you want to scare the crap out of old ladies walking down the street, this is the car for you.. coming from a 94, i doubt you will even notice minor creature comfort differences between the 97 and 99+ cars, so i wont even mention them because i dont want you to start pulling your hair out over the little things like i would..
smile.gif

but hey, ive been dreaming of owning a black 99+ gts since 98, so im a little jaded.. i know you have your heart set on the 97 and i hope it works out for you..

no matter what decision you make, you cant go wrong.. i would imagine that seeing two vipers parked next to each other in the garage is a dream come true for most people..

just think, in a few days, you will have acheieved CHUCK status!!

and by the way, ACR's come stock with tubes and filters, thats where they get the extra 10 hp for the 460hp claim..

i'd say the acr, though i'm partial. a couple other things the 2000 colors are steel gray or black, steel gray a 1 year color. Black is not really that bad per comment about fun washing. i have red and it is pretty bad, thought i'd never want black though with as much attention the red requires black would be no problem. stealthier too.

2000 ACR is a good year with 10qt oil pan, something to consider is adjustable suspension. cars before May have koni's afterwords they are dynamic suspensions and different spring rates. koni's considered preferable for reasons listed on this board site.

for differences see: http://www.viperclub.org/menus/index_ivr_features.htm

If the ACR is in good condition with no problems such as previous body damage or abuse ect. I would lean heavily twords the ACR. I love the Blue/White combo of the 97's and the older cars don't depreciate as fast as the newer ones, but the ACR is
a rare car, limited production, good color combo, and the build
quality of a 2000 ACR will be superior to the other models you mentioned. The 97 probably does not have a warranty which the others still have some of the factory warranty left.
I have owned a 97 GTS Blue/White, 2000 Red/Silver GTS, and my
current 2001 Sapphire/Silver GTS ACR. I can tell you the build
quality and component quality of the ACR is much better than the
others I have owned.
As the others have mentioned, none of the cars you are considering have ABS brakes so don't consider this a factor for
one car over the other. ( 01 first year for ABS )
Good luck,

I'm ready to buy a GTS to go along with my RT/10 but I have a few concerns. I have found two GTS' and one ACR. The first GTS is a 99 Black w/ grey stripes and has 4.5K Miles for $59K. The ACR is a 2000 Graphite w/ grey stripes and has 7K miles for $59K and the last GTS is a 97 Blue/white w/TNT 555 package and 9k miles for $57K. What do you think is the best deal? I know the 2000 has ABS and there other differences between the vehicles but all things being equal what do you think? The car will not see track time and will only be driven on weekends. Thanks for the info and insight.

SSunburn, why do you think the ACR is the best deal? I thought ABS was standard on 2000 and up? Thanks for the info. Why not the GTS w/ the TNT package?

I thank all who have helped me out with replies to my questions. Does anyone have a solid, picture of a "steel grey" Viper I can look at? I'm in So Cal and would like to see a good pic before I fly to Michigan to see the car. If there's any So Cal,Central Cal, Nor Cal members who know of any GTS' that might be for sale please let me know. It would make things a bit easier for me. Any color but red (keeping red RT/10) My $$$$$ is burning a hole in my pocket! I want my GTS before America's birthday.
Thanks-Jonathan

Redsled,
If you plan to do any significant mods or nitrous you may want to consider forged over cast pistons. If I'm not mistaken '99 was the last year for the forged, and for some it may make this a more desirable engine. Frankly though, I think the most satisfying option to consider is the color. Get the color that stirs you the most and you will be one stirred pilot
