Has anyone seen the Volkswagon Commercial with the Yellow Viper?

It's an old schtick- I remember another add where a guy gets out of a red exotic (Italian?) and two girls comment, "I wonder what he's compensating for?" , and then look lustfully at a guy getting out of an econobox. Yeah. Right. I've had a lot of attention while driving the Viper, and all of it good. Never a peep from the eco-terrorist type, or feminist. Most love the notion of American muscle putting it to Europes best. Then again, I live in Chicago, which isn't all concerned about being "PC".

I think that it is great they used the GTS. Has to say something about the look of the car. They could have used a Gen3 but it was the Gen2 GTS. :)

EXACTLY! An assessment from people who make a living knowing what the public thinks, the marketing and advertising types. Lending weight to our argument that the GenI/GenII is the consummate Viper. :2tu:

I think the ad is F'd up.
To imply that, people who have excelled in life and reward themselves by owning an exceptional vehicles are really compensating for something else, is just a play on class envy. If your a nobody, with an average job, and no motivation to change it, then you should drive a VW.

From the people the brought you 2! world wars:)

I also think this is the kind of crap that feeds weak minded people to do s#!t like what happened to Chad's car a few days ago.

CORRECT!!! BUT,

VW + German (people) + world wars ... ???

It is just a "funny" ad - nothing more.

You will need at least some humor to understand the ad.

Most of you are way to serious about ******, Nazis, Krauts, ...whatever. If you do not have other issues, you are lucky!

I was just jerking around.
There was a book written about the advertising business 15 years ago called " From the people who brought you Pearl Harbor". They were brain storming an ad slogan for a Japanese Auto maker.

Yeah, besides, we're all driving DAIMLER-Chrysler products. Not the people's car...******'s car itself.

In this world economy there is absolutely no car built entirely in any one country.

HA! I had just started downloading ab's link when I look in the other room after hearing some guy on tv blaring on a bullhorn-and presto, there's the yellow Viper.

While it may not compensate for his shortcomings, it sure shows them.. Like that flakey Saturn ad a few months ago with a chick talking about how the Saturn was like her b/f or something..and that's why she bought it.

Who approves these ads??

- Then they toss the bullhorn out the window..

Has anyone noticed the diclaimer at the end? "This is a dramatization, please do not throw megaphones out of your window"

They should have one for the viper driver,
" Please don't hang your short comings outside the window" :)

****** was a nasty dude, so yup, it is good to be serious about it. Being of Austrian descent, I see nothing wrong in pointing that out.

My observation, though oblique, is more about a brand transformation. The origin of the brand, and the stigma of the early years, compared to this ad, which tries to position the VW as "above it all" in an elitist way. This is a long way from the brand origins.

A modern analog would be a Yugo becoming an "made" brand (although the VW has always had a good mechanical rep, something the Yugo does not enjoy). Laughable at this point in time, but 30 years from now???
