Helmet info needed for VOI9

What are the requirements/certifications for acceptable helmets at the track events. Do they have to be SA2005 or can they be older/ How about the SNELL M-classifications.

Just got VOI packet today. It says bring your own helmets ( Minimum DOT-00, Snell 95 or later) Helemts are required for all driving activities They will only have a very limited supply of helmets there.

There might be a limited number of new helmets available from the local vendors. As usual, Items at the track often are not as inexpensive as those purchased in advance.

At previous VOI's I have seen participants running around like crazy borrowing each others helmets, trying to get something that fits. Best to bring your own.

In a pinch they might allow a motorcycle helmet if you suppliment it with a Nomex head sock. Cycle helmets are not recommended because they do not usually have flame retardant linings.

Does open face vs. closed face matter when it comes to helmets?

I'm going off the local requirements for track days here, but they seem more restrictive than VOI. I needed Snell 95 or newer helmet. Open face or closed didn't matter. I had my Shoei closed faced with the visor removed and my instructor had an open faced helmet on. I'm assuming either would do. I'm wearing my hard top down along with a long sleeved shirt and jeans. It may not be required by VOI, but I figured if my local racing org says to have that, its a good idea...

The motorcycle helmets are generally fine. If you're drag racing or autocrossing, an M2000 is acceptable (by NHRA standards). I got an open-faced M2000 for less than $100 and it has been fine every time I've drag raced. I'm not sure about open track racing, if you need SA grade or not. But those SA grade helmets are much more expensive and I couldn't find anyone who carried any (besides online).

Ordered the Simpson Super bandit nomex Snell SA2005 over the internet from Helmet City. Delivery to LA so I can pick it up on the way through. Get a mail from Helmet City saying 10 days as Simpson need to make it. So I get on the phone and call Kyle and as soon as I mentioned that I need it for VOI he said it would be in LA in 3 day come rain or shine. You can't beat that for service. I think the M generally refers to a motorcycle helmet which may be good enough for VOI, but it is not SA rated (not fireproof) and may not be acceptable at other automotive racing events. SA2005 is the most current automotive helmet although SA2000 is supposedly good thru 2010. SA2005 unfortunately start at around $250.

SA Rated Helmets:
Snell "SA" (Sports Application) rated professional helmets are designed for auto racing and provide extreme impact resistance and higher fire protection.

M Rated Helmets:
Snell "M" (Motorcycle) rated helmets are designed for motorcycling and other motorsports. They offer slightly less protection than SA rated helmets.

What are the key differences between SA and M Rated Helmets:

SA standard requires flammability test while the M standard does not.
SA standard has rollbar impact test while M standard does not.
SA standard allows narrower visual field than M standard (Some SA helmets aren't street legal).

How do I know if my helmet meets the necessary Snell specifications?
Always check your club rulebook to determine what helmet specifications they require. SCCA Solo rules, for example, will allow you to use the current Snell specification, as well as the previous two Snell specifications. So, for the 2006 season, you could use Snell Snell M95/SA95, Snell M00/SA00, or Snell M05/SA05 helmets. Snell M90/SA90 helmets would not meet requirements after October 1, 2005.

Some other racing organizations will allow you to use the current Snell specification and only the previous Snell specification, so read your rulebook carefully.

Also, be sure that your club will allow the use of Snell "M" rated helmets. SCCA Solo does allow these helmets, although some organizations that run high speed events will require Snell "SA" rated helmets.

As tech inspector of SAFE Motorsports PLEASE get a SA helmet. What's the difference $100-$200? Failing tech just one time because you have the wrong helmet will be more costly than the difference in M vs SA price.
