Same setup - same problem. I ordered a snakebox from Apex that supposedly cures the problem (eliminates the surging, a/f ratio mapping and c/e light). I will post the results once known.

I have the same problem, I installed new O2's on the back. the surging started about 2 days later....then BAM! the engine light came back on. I thought I had it solved! do you think that putting the cats back on may be the only solution?

Belanger system--same problem. I got a light 80 miles after installing the system last spring. Code check at that time showed 02 heater codes and cat efficiency codes. My A/F ratio was way out of wack(over 20% correction-a dyno pull verified the extreme rich condition) I relocated the 02 bungs a few weeks ago. With the bungs moved, the heater codes cleared, but the cat codes were still there and the light on. 1300 miles later the light went out on it's own. A code check showed the cat codes still in memory, but the computer not thinking it worth setting a light. 350 miles later, the light came back on. Checked it yesterday. Cat codes are still in memory, but an 02 heater code is what turned the light on. I had hoped relocating the bungs would cure that problem completely. The good news is that when he cleared the code, the adaptive reset was only 7%, well within normal parameters. He didn't run the car at high RPM, but then he didn't when I was getting the 20% correction prior to 02 relocation. My car has never had a surging problem and it appears the computer is not thinking my missing cats are worth a light-------so far.

I have the Apex "Snake Box" O2 sims and no check engine light with completely removed secondary O2s and over 1000 miles now. I do have cats, I was just rtying this out to see if I can make track bypass tubes for the cats without tripping the MIL and I think I can.

Sammy corrections for your check engine light can be made by installing correct handshaking parts to your exhaust-system.There is a "Viper parts person" on this board that continues to do his home work in locating the parts which work. For example with correct high flow cat-convertors you will keep your exhaust system with in Emission Laws.At the same time they keep your side-sills and interior cooler, reduce back pressure also. This is the first step towards an increase in your performance add-on and correcting your check-engine light concern.Wm

p/s,JonB do we still have stock?

SAMMYTHEBULL,

I have a '98 GTS, and removed the cats + installed a Corsa Exhaust system. What I love: The performance, sound, and cooler side exhaust covers... What I hate: Check Engine Light, Surging problems, backfiring, discoloration of the paint above exhaust tips (removed with clay bar), and over powering smell of gas inside vehicle.

I did a lot of research on this subject, and you basically have 2 choices that I am aware of:

1.) Go with the snake box, or another rear O2 sim. This SHOULD, from what I've heard - no direct experience, correct the check engine light and surging problems. I believe the smell of gas will not go away, backfiring - not sure, discoloration of rear - not sure. Cost - $229 **** Note: Before making this purchase, I would try on remove the rear O2's. Mine were not removable with normal tools, and had to be heated and broken loose at a muffler shop. This could increase the cost of this job. (I had to remove my rear O2's to install my new Corsa Exhaust).

2.) Go with 2 High Flow cats. I decided to go this route. I purchased them from Sean Roe at $125 a piece (Ovals). He claims the HP loss is only 1-2 HP, basically - no difference. The exhaust node volume only decreased slightly. The side seals are hotter than no cat, but not nearly as bad as stock. No check engine light, no gas smell, no backfiring, no rear discoloration. The overpowering smell of fuel/fumes was just to much - for me. This job will cost slightly more than doing the snake box, but consider this.... If you ever sell your Viper you will have to have cats on the car anyway....

Hope this helps.......

All of these problems that occur when you remove the cats can be cured with our Snake Box Kit. It includes everything you need to do a simple, and quick installation. We have sold about 20 sets so far, and everyone is happy with the results. Just about everyone with 96 and later GENIIs will have the low rpm surging, and mid 98 and later GENIIs will get the check engine light. WE CAN FIX THIS!

NO MORE CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS
NO MORE LOW RPM SURGING

Introductory Special of $229.99 for the complete kit is still in effect!!
