Help! Rust on brand new rotors?!

I need some advice fast - I put brand new Eradispeed rotors on a few months back behind my HRE 547R's. Okay, I know they aren't race rotors, but they are beautiful, prolly a couple hundred miles on them. I put the car away in the garage (not even after a wash) about a month ago. It's just been sitting in there, no moisture, etc. A few weeks ago, I saw a faint rust colored dust just on the rotors - I took a piece of detail cotton, wiped some of it off, and left the rest, figuring it would easily come off when I drive the car. Today I looked again, the rust is thicker and harder, and wouldn't brush away with the cloth? I am pissed, it looks bad, like my old rotors did before I took them off. What can I do? Should I take car out for a spin and brake on them? What is going on, the car wasn't wet - what causes this? Any cleaners that won't hurt HRE's? Help -

I had a set on my C5 any moisture in the air would cause them to rust, does it rain in December in Connecticut? Take it out for a spin and it will go away.

Yep, Agree 100%.. You may not feel moisture, but its there... Its just surface dust, and will come off the second you hit the brakes..

Spray your rotors with a heavy coat of WD40 every time you drive. They wont rust any more, they'll never stop, but they'll never rust.

Cool, thanks guys, I was worried bec. those rotors were a decent investment, and I love the was they look. Yeah, we've had rain, snow, etc. Some sand on road, but I think I might take her out for a light spin to blast some of that off.

Leave the rust, if you take it for a drive today it'll just come back tomorrow.

Besides, don't they use salt on the roads up there? Drive on that crap and rotor rust will be the least of your problems.

Good point Chuck, yeah salt is everywhere, and that's why I didn't want to take car out - but if I wait til spring, will the rusting by so much worse that it won't come totally off by driving the car?

Good question. Rust is like cancer on most metal I would call the company that made the rotors and ask them, maybe they have a coating. I know they zinc wash them before shipping to keep rust off. Or how about a scotch pad, pull the wheels and spin the rotor while holding it to the surface but do both sides.

If you are really that worried about it, then remove the rotors, coat them with good industrial quality protection and store them until spring. Make sure you thoroughly clean the protector off before reinstalling them.

Now that I've done my good deed for the poser crowd, what did you do with your stock rear rotors? I'll take them off your hands.

I don't think I have ever seen a set of rotors that didn't have rust on them after any amount of moisture was applied to them...even on high humidity days you can see traces when you come out the next morning to check on your car.

no matter what you do the rust will come right back. like others have posted after the first good stop it will wipe clean so dont waste your time with cleaning them or it will be just that... a waste of time!

LOL get some axle grease and give them a good coating. That'll stop the rusting.
Just kidding.....NEVER put any lube on your brakes!!!!!!!
