After removing the wheel, you have to remove the inner panel that covers the battery. They don't make it very easy on you!

Stupid question but if the battery is dead can you jump the battery just by hooking up cables to the positive terminal under the hood and the negative cable to the frame? Or do you have to get access to the battery?

You could try jumping it with two cars. If I recall correctly it says to try this in the owners manual. You are cranking over a V10 so you might need the extra amps.

Yes, for jumping it my understanding is that you can use this terminal next to the PCM rather than accessing the actual battery.

A word of caution when replacing the battery. I just replaced mine in my 98. After removing the rear tire. You must remove the plastic access panel at the rear of the wheel well. Remove the three small screws around the edge of the fender first. Remove the plastic compression tab at the back corner. The three bolts at the bottom will be the hardest to remove. Most likely they will be rusty and here is where you want to take your time. Pull out on the plastic flap and try to spray a penetrant on the bolt behind the fender. Put your wrench on the 1st bolt and try backing it out only 1/4 turn. Turn it back in and then back out 1/2 turn. Keep doing this while spraying the bolt from inside. You need to get these three bolts out wright. If you do not do this you may spin the crimped sheet metal nut on the inside plastic. If you spin this nut you will rip our your holes for holding this plastic together. There is no way to use standard nuts there. Be careful and take your time. Once these are out the rest is easy.

Do not put two cars on it. NO NO NO.

Just change the battery. Pull off the back wheel. On my GTS, to the best of my recollection, there are 4 bolts to be loosened between the back bumper and the pan. There are also 4 more bolts to be loosened near the wheel well under the car. Lastly, there is a push-friction anchor on the inside of the wheelwell. You have to pull it straight out. Remove the pan and the battery sits in a cradle.

Original battery, Jim? I still have the original in my car. I figure for a '99 that's not too bad. I bought a Sears Diehard last month because I doubt the original will last much longer. I just haven't gotten around to swapping it out - it is sitting in my garage. It is on my "25 things to do to the Viper" list.

I was going to get an Optima but after a lot of searching the forums it seems that the Optima craze comes and goes. It was a big thing about a year ago and now there are many complaints about them.

Also, you don't need 2 cars to jump it or extra power because it's a V10. Thing is it's low compression and has a gear reduction starter so thats why they crank over so fast and easy. A click can be a dirty battery post and cables need cleaned @ the battery. Remove L/R tire and cover and test battery.

JUCD, I feel your pain. My truck is in the shop due to starting problems and my diehard was just bought last year so I thought it had to be a different problem. Shop called me and said the battery is all they are finding wrong so I guess some batteries dont last long.

Semper Fi and welcome home!!! You do recall that you have to get the standard safety brief prior to Libo...so here you go. "Don't try and make up all those missed miles during your first cruise...take it easy and re-acquaint yourself with the beast first!!!"

Jucd get a battery tender if you let your car sit for long periods of time. Its really cheap and I still have the original battery in my 99 and have never had a problem. It just hooks to the cables under the hood and plug it in to the wall with a extention cord.

I couldn't agree more...after I got my Viper and had to replace the dead battery I couldn't wait to take it out for a ride. Well, I was stopped at a red light and when it turned green, I punched it. Not realizing just how much power the beast had I did a 360 in the intersection :D . No embarrasment. Get acquanted and enjoy it!

1631 posts and you dont know where your battery is? If Belleville is relatively close I can go help your friend out. I am just north of Chicago.

Another thing is make sure your jumper cables are good quality. I have in the past had to jump a car with 2 sets of jumper cables because they were cheap 8 gauge cables. I now use a set of 4 gauge cables.
