Your defroster in your car takes humid air, cools it to condense the moisture and dry it out, and then blows in on the glass. The heat taken out of the air is put into the atmosphere via the heat exchanger in front of the radiator. A dehumidier has the elements of an air conditioner (evaporator, compressor, condensor) except the hot air isn't sent out the window, it's left in the room being dried. The net effect of cooling one chunk of the interior air (to condense the moisture) and heating another chunk of air (to move the heat) is not 100% efficient and will eventually heat the room. That's why there's an electric bill!
