I put rear exhaust on my Gen 1 and used the Gen 2 side sills. The clever designer put an extra layer of fiberglass on the top section (separated by an air layer) so the heat upwards (your leg, your hand when you get in and out) doesn't get too hot. You may have a little trouble installing them with the OEM insulation, but overall mine seem cooler to the tough, fit fine, look fine.

You can save a lot of money by doing what I did on my old 99 GTS with side exhausts. I simply had holes drilled in the right place for the side exit exhaust to come out and then added riveted aluminum on the outside of sills adjacent to the tips to prevent heat etc. from getting to the sill paint. Many track owners have done the same and works just as good as buying a new set of sills. You keep the oem heat shields too.

When I did my conversion, I traded mine with another guy for Gen I sills. Worked out really well, and it only cost me to have them painted Blue/Black..
That way I can say I still have OEM side sills, kind of ..

There are several people on this site that are willing to do this..

If anyone is interested in Gen 1 sills for racing, I have some that were dented/flattened on the bottom because my car is lowered. From above, not too bad looking and certainly "useable." I can send pix.
