Identifying Trouble Codes Without DRB on 2001

I tried what the D-C Service Manual recommends: ignition on - off - on - off - on within 5 seconds. A search said that the check engine light will flash to provide the code (pauses between numbers). No luck at all. Check engine light is on and the procedure as noted above yields nothing in the way of a flashing check engine light. Should this procedure work on a 2001? Any help would be appreciated. I don't want to spend $150 plus on a DRB just yet.

thanks

This is not going to work on your 2001...doesn't on my 2000 either...you can run up to a Pep Boys, AutoZone, Checkers, etc...and have them read the codes for you, typically free...And when you get a chance, call up Summit Racing and order an EQUUS 3100...super easy to use and inexpensive through Summit...$127 I think plus shipping, and if it is not in stock, they can drop ship from manufacturer, even overnight...but close to $150 when all said and done...still a great bargain.

I got my Equus 3100 from Summit Racing for $140.55 total within 2 days after ordering it.

Thanks Norm. Does that Scan Tool read all the codes? A TSB for 2001's #25-001--1 Feb 01 notes that some "generic Scan Tools will not display certain DTC's".

They do all the time [for the Dealers]. I'm not sure how the GP would get their updates.

Ok, I will come clean. Unplugged the Skip Shift (I know, if I shifted like a man I would not need to unplug the Skip Shift)and you know what happened. If I buy a scan tool and clear the code, will the check engine light come back on?

Thanks, Tom

TSB #25-001-01 is for 2001 vehicles built prior to January 12,2001 [MDH 0112XX] that do not already have the PCM software at the 2001 calibration 14 revision level.

Vehicles: AB,AN,BR/BE,DN,SR,TJ&WJ

A generic scan tool may not display certain Diagnostic Trouble Codes [DTC] when a Malfunction Indicator Lamp [MIL] illuminates. This condition may occur on any 2001 Jeep, Truck, or Viper vehicle. This condition may not be a concern if an enhanced scan tool, like the DRBIII, is used to read the DTC. The DTC's that may not display on the generic scan tool are:
a. P0031 - O2 sensor 1/1 heater circuit low
b. P0032 - O2 sensor 1/1 heater circuit high
c. P0037 - O2 sensor 1/2 heater circuit low
d. P0038 - O2 sensor 1/2 heater circuit high
e. P0051 - O2 sensor 2/1 heater circuit low
f. P0052 - O2 sensor 2/1 heater circuit high
g. P0071 - Ambient temperature sensor performance

YES!
You'll need to plug in a "Skip shift eliminator".

GEE I've never notice that feature in my Viper and it's pluged in.

Viper Wizard, please correct me if I'm wrong...but I thought that the MIL light would go out on it's own in 3-4 driving cycles AFTER the problem corrected (in this case, re-plugging in the skip shift eliminator. THANKS !!!

Yes it will, but it may take more then 3 or 4 driving cycles. It depends on driving time, loads, temps, speeds, ect. The Pcm must meet its criteria for a "good global trip" and it has to do it twice before turning the MIL light off.
