I have to say, I am a little disappointed. I came to the gen 5 forum and most of the threads are complains or things that are not right with the car.

I was lucky enough to be in NYC to see the car in person. It is not like the pics. The pics do not do this body justice. It looks great!

In regards to the comments I see on power levels being too low, I urge you all to consider a few things.

1- So the car has 640 hp and not 700 and Mustang has 650 etc. consider the fact that viper is much lighter and in the world of race cars, that is all that matters. Less weight means better handling, cornering, stopping, and accelerating.

2-Also consider that 100 lbs is equal to 10 HP in the racing world. So less is more.

3- Be mindful SRT reads these forums. How do you think all of these complaints make them feel? They spend 1.5 years busting their butt to bring a dead car that was to be sold off back to life and this is the thanks they get? I can understand disappointment folks but lets not bash them into the ground. Let's all be thankful there is a gen 5 even if it is not exactly what you expected.

4- If any of you know SRT, they are crazy. They have avgas in their blood and they eat left over car parts for breakfast. Their version of coffee is 15W40. Cold and thick. Most of these guys have been around the race track their entire lives an many have their own track prepped vehicles. Almost all of them can handle a car better than most of us can dream of. They have also proven this fact by beating the VCA everytime at the SRT vs VCA event. Not one of us have driven the new viper. So logic would dictate if these guy are so pumped about the new car, and they say it is a monster on the track, we must trust them. Look at Chrysler's products in the last year and a bit. None of them are half ass'd. And with Sergio supporting Viper and giving a full green light, and with Ralph (who has proven what he is capable of!) at the wheel of SRT, I can only imagine what this thing will be like. I will tell you, none of them would be so taken with the car if is sucked.

So what's my point to all this? Until someone drives the new car, I withhold comment on if 640 hp is enough. I am willing to bet SRT has some tricks up their sleeves.

Have faith folks. SRT has always delivered as has Ralph. Let's show them the respect they deserve and see where things go once the performance numbers are in.

I think the gen V looks great also. Car had to be upgraded to appeal to more buyers or it was dead. Internals are staged for future HP gains, they planned this and will play their hand as they see best.
I have faith in Ralph and SRT to keep delivering.

We've heard all the complainers.
We've heard all the cheerleaders.
We've heard each party complaining about the other.

It's getting old.

Thanks Robert... I'm with you 100%.
The easiest way to say it without getting all techy is this ;
It's all about "balanced engineering"!
I'm very confident this car is engineered in perfect balance so it performs at the highest levels.
We've had too many armchair marketing gurus prior to the reveal and too many armchair engineers after the reveal.
I'm putting my faith in the experts who do this for a living.

Thanks for keeping Viper alive! :2tu:

Amen! I completely agree! For those complaining about hp and it not having more than a Mustang, think of this Shelby just announced a Mustang producing over 900 hp! Where does it end? Besides do you really want SRT to release the most hp Gen V right off the bat when the C7 Corvette isn't finished allowing GM to go and make the new Corvette have even more power? I think releasing the Gen V with 640 is a good way to go and then after the C7 comes out then up the power on the Viper to dominate even more (because we know that even if the Corvette were to come out with more power than the Viper the Viper will still be faster around the track, just look at the Ring times).

The Gen V car is world class from what I have seen, heard and read so far. I cannot wait until I can see it in person and drive it!

I believe the disappointment from many comes from a fast paced car market where 640HP denies the bragging rights many of us expected. Not about which is the faster car, but gives that viseral driving experience compared to the competitiion. There are many car brands on the drawing board that by September, 640HP will be dated. Yes, there will be bolt-ons,but does not inspire the expectations out of the box. Beautiful car,but I had 675HP on my ACR before I sold it and was hoping for something comparable.

Owning a Viper should be so much more then "bragging rights" the whole dyno king numbers game is meaningless to people that actually drive and enjoy owning a Viper. It has been said endless times before that there will ALWAYS be someone with more power then you. If all that matters is having the best number out (at the time anyway) then buy something to get you "that prestige", but you know it will be short lived as tech and power are ever changing so plan on buying a new car yearly.

The performance of the new Viper will eclipse anything out there regardless of power claims. It has the whole package now and will rise to the top you wait and see. The SRT engineers have always had the brains to make the best, now they have the backing to do it! There will be more great things to come for the Viper and although some will obsess over a number everyone will be impressed with what SRT has brought to the table! Thanks so much guys for all the incredible effort you have poured into your newest creation.

I hate the new Gen V Viper. Now I have to sell something to fit it in my garage. If it was ugly, under powered and poorly engineered I wouldn't be feeling lust in my heart. And one of my cars wouldn't have to be adopted by another owner. Darn Gen V anyway.

Stop your complaining! ;) The car looks great, surely will perform great, but should at least have listed 650HP, given the history of HP bumps on the car - not a huge deal since it likely will be underrated anyway, but would be nice. Also, the "toupee" look on the console section above the steering wheel should have been smoothed out and made to look a bit better, but oh well.

I will take a different slant on this...

The complainers will help make the car better in the future with their criticism. It gives open-minded designers much needed input. Sort of like I would rather have someone who works for me tell me what they think instead of being a "Yes Man."

Do you honestly think the new Viper would have the clamshell hood and styling back to Gen 2 if everyone on this board was did nothing but praise the style of the Gen 3/4? Do you think the interior would have had this significant of an upgrade had people not been critical of previous models? I bet most SRT people look it as feedback and don't take it too personally. At least I would hope so or they won't last too long in this business.

So, I think it is best for people to air their opinions good and bad. Makes a better car in the long run.

Have no fear. Latest information from DC Performance is that from information they have about the new engine, that there will be additional bolt on components that work on previous V-10 that will transfer to the new engine to provide additional horsepower for those who feel they need it.

In addition, these initial power figures are preliminary from SRT. Several years ago the VCA Regional Presidents were invited to the Chrysler technical center. They were working in the dyno room to test out some last minute engineering changes to the motor that were showing over 600 hp. We got to see the look on their faces as these motors began showing monster power.

While it is pretty easy to complain in these forums, it is much more difficult to produce the power, and meet all the federal and Chrysler guidelines for noise, emissions, drivability and durability.

So maybe we just should all agree that we want to see more numbers that we can brag about, but the real world production vehicle is what we can buy and drive. Some will step up and buy the car as the reality, while others will still pound on their computers demanding more more more.

Personally, I am drooling all over this Viper. My God...have you seen the seats and interior. Did you see the tremendous upgrades in electronics and displays. We can now play our personal music, connect with Sirius, take hands free blue tooth phone calls, set and forget the temperature, and never need to take our keys out of out pockets to lock/unlock doors and start up the car. We have a place to put a cup of coffee, a place to store our i-Pads, a stereo to rock the music, while the car's performance rocks our world.

We can drive with a smooth suspension to the track, push a button and the shocks optimize for the venue, then switch back for the smooth ride home. We can lock our gas tank, and push a button to gain access for fill-ups. We do not need to spend an extra +$1000 to change out to a proper rear gear ratio, or +$2,000 to gain a usable 5th and 6th gear. No need to go aftermarket for up scale leather interiors, get more color and stripe options than ever before, do not need to buy an aftermarket wide body conversion kit to get that special powerful look, buy wheel spacers to get that extra 1/2 inch of stance. Buy special lowering kits to reduce the wheel arch gap, buy new aftermarket wheels to put on wider rubber in front and rear, buy an AME computer upgrade to get displays of engine performance or get faster computer controls. Buy aftermarket instrumentation to show performance statistics, upgrade the exhausts for better sound and flow, jury rig a rear camera so people with wings or roll bars can see when backing up, buy aftermarket cold air intakes, cobble up seat lowering kits so taller people can fit in (and in the process making it unsuitable for shorter people to also drive). No more need to tear apart your console to install short throw shifters. No need to install aftermarket harder durometer bushings to better control transmission flexing. No need to weld in a full body cage to stiffen up the interior. No need to go to the aftermarket to cross brace the engine compartment.

This car is flat out better in almost every way. Forum members have been complaining forever about "cream puff" engines and spending thousands to upgrade the internals to forged components.

This is a tremendous first effort by SRT to revive the Viper. They have obviously listened to their customers, and have done the heavy lifting to produce a Viper that can stand tall on the world stage. They have even given us an out of the box race car to carry the Viper banner to the world endurance racing stage.

I think SRT has done a magnificent job. Some will get kicks out of picking it apart, and I kind of understand that need, but from what I can see, this Viper Team has produced a spectacular new vehicle.

I also see the future as bright, with a Convertible, an ACR, a track racer, special editions, and other wonderful Vipers that will be coming down the Conner Assembly line.

That's pretty much the antithesis of what the original Viper stood for.

If I'm not mistaken, the original Viper had only two criteria: beat the Shelby Cobra's 0-100-0 time and cost 34k to make.

Having attended the festivities in NYC and seeing the new GTS first hand, I think SRT did a great job with the Gen V. As I have said in other threads, I am glad there are going to be several models to choose from. There is a lot I don't need in the GTS, but in the poll running on this forum right now, 3 out of 4 who are planning to buy this year are choosing the GTS over the SRT model. That really surprises me! Like it or not, it seems like SRT Marketing understood where the demand is. And on down the road we have the Vert and the ACR for Gen V buyers to look forward to...something for almost all of us.

Guys. You gotta get over it. This is no longer the original Viper from over 20 years ago. That ship has sailed. Original was a stripper car with no A/C, no windows (except for those stored in the trunk. No weather proofing with that folding picnic table, also kept in the trunk.
Original viper had inconsistent handling, lousy brakes, massive interior heat, little insulation, junk carpet, a spare tire only good for 45mph, wheels that weighed a ton, no racing heritage, bucked like a bronco in low RPM driving, had no aftermarket support, and yet began the journey that has become Viper.

The older, back to basic cars are still available for anyone that wants one, but Chrysler was always challenged to sell over 1,5oo a year.

It is the same for Jeep. Some fans still want the rough riding, poor handling, back to basics steel buggies that romped over the rocks, but that market has also dwindled.

The people that are in the market for a high performance sports car have gone up-market. They demand the finer things. Those that do no want this can keep their older cars, and revel in the experience, but the market place is severly limited today for such a car.

New Car will still beat the latest Shelby 0-100-0 but now cost $100 k to make. (Shelby also costs big bucks)

Hey I love the new car and I'll probably own one.
But I don't get my ******* in a *** because someone has the audacity to question or criticize some aspect of it like some of the suckups here.
You would think people are criticizing their first born child.

I understand what you are saying. And maybe I did not word myself properly (would not be the first time! ;)). Sorry.

All I was trying to say is there may be more to this car than we don't know yet. Not saying don't voice opinions or provide constructive criticism. That's what forums are all about. More in hopes that before we all think all is lost, let's see what the track numbers are when production hits. :drive:

Now first born children, they are trouble. Something very wrong with them! :rolaugh:

(I was not the first born in my family so I can say this! :D:rolaugh:)

I have to admit that I am one of the SRT cheerleaders praising the new car. I was one of the few that got to see the clay version and was able to base my decisions on somehting i could actually see and not the hundreds of renderings and a small toy to base my final decision on. Even now knowing what I know about the weight. gears and HP i still know that the car will deliver enough to stay on top. THe track statistics and 1/4 miles times will not dissapoint. From what I am hearing we have nothing to fear about future HP since apparently there are a few mules out there with something even more........stay tuned.

Hey people it seems some are missing a point SRT was making at the unveil. As I understand it you will still be able to get the old simple Viper which will only have the gov. requiremnts to be on the road. We can do what we want with it. As for the 640 hp, it will really surprise many with the added launch control and new tires. As Mopar boy and many others know that my car has a hard time keeping the back of the car straight even on a well preped track. If the system is the same as on many of our more expensive brothers, we're in for some fun. I have had a chance to play with a few. I think it will also keep the snake caged for new owners and reduce the numbers of wrecked cars

As for the SRT team Home Run!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You got it Rocket. Hater's Forum... That cracks me up. :rolaugh: It might fly on Viper Alley, but probably not here. :lmao:

The "hater's Forum" could be disguised and called the "Do this to the Gen V and I will like it" forum.
