I can't sit and wait for this site to load sometimes. Most of the sites I go to load in 1-2-3 seconds. This site, I could sit for 20-30 seconds waiting for it to load. Anyone else notice this? I almost didn't bother posting this cause it took so long to go from screen to screen.

Yes, it is very, very slow. Seems like it's worse in the morning. I read two other sites before this one opens it's first thread. What's the deal?

It's painfully slow to the point of total frustration sometimes. It is never fast and rarely even "normal" it has just varying degrees of slowness.

FYI, NONE of the regional sites are on the same server as the forums. They have their own completely separate server. The regional server has almost no load on it.

The forums server's memory will be doubled, to the max of the servers capability, next week. This should much of the speed issue, which is only a problem during certain heavy usage hours which currently utilize 100% of the servers memroy.

thanks for the update Jay, I know early morning here you struggle to get access, when most of the US should be tucked in bed

Early mornings are the worst here in the northeast, so I don't know if that theory holds water.

Thanks, we have been watching CPU load and memory use logs, we'll look at the times you and UK have mentioned.

We are looking at four things:

1) Are we getting slammed by spam throught the mailserver as long as the site has been around (going on eleven years), this is a very real possibility. If this is the issue, we have a solution.
2) For the early AM issues, we believe it may have to do with how we perform backups (which we do during that time). We do two backups, one a 100% tape backup and one to a storage server which only updates any changes on the server from the prevous day. It is very possible the tape backup is the issue here. If so, we'll discontinue the tape backups and invest in a different backup method.
3) Memory issue as previously mentioned, plan is in place to address this issue.
4) We are using an older version of the Forums software that is not real efficient in how it utilizes the database. Plans are in place for an upgrade, but were delayed awaiting the latest "about to be released" version of the software. Well, it has been "about to be released" for months, so we'll likely just have to do two upgrades, or get special permission to get hold of the Beta version.

We looked at the backups, and that appears to be the issue for those overseas and the east coast early risers. Sometimes the tape backup (which starts at 3AM CST) is not done until 8AM CST (That is how huge the forums database has become). The tape backup uses a lot of CPU and memory, so we turned it off and will depend on the incremental backups. Please let us know if this takes care of the issues seen during those early AM hours.

RAID the puppy for redundancy and tape backup once a week/month. Nothing here is life and death in the long run.
