Why bother with a skip shift eliminator? When I have noticed the skip shift arrow I have just run the rpms up a little more and then shifted.Several times I have shifted 1-2 when the arrow is on.Probably more than several times. The only reason I noticed it was because it makes a louder clunk while shifting.Seems to be mostly lip service for the feds and non-functional in the real world.I hope the shift block to reverse is much stronger and of course I have no plans on testing it any time soon on my car. Bruce,
when the arrow is on you should not be able to throw to 2nd.
that is why i have the skip shift eliminator and love it!
no matter what my rpms i just throw in to 2nd no problem at all!!
this way you make the call on shifting not the car... i have enough on my mind when driving to be worrying about my rpms to make it let me hit 2nd... also it can be a pain in the bass when in alot of traffic if you couldn't give it more rpms.

my advice put on the skip shift it is cheap and works awesome!!!

I guess what I am saying is that the skip shift doesn't seem to work too well.I have shifted through it with relatively little effort and wouldn't have noticed except for the clunk it makes. It does not seem to be any hindrance at all unless your used to shifting a porsche or something. Bruce

I still don't know what you mean by it doesn't seem to be a hindrance. It prevents the shift from 1 to 2. If you do shift it goes to 4. So if there is a fraction of a second lost, it's a fraction of a second too much. IT IS A HINDRANCE. You might run up the revs to avoid it but the reaction time involved is "the hindrance."

BTW, what is the purpose of the skip shift?

The purpose of the skip-shift (CAGS.. Computer Aided Gear Shift) was to meet EPA/DOT requirements. These cars, vettes and F-bodies w/ the 6spd all have them so they can get into a different emissions/fuel consumption class. Skipping from 1-4 keeps the revs low and, in theory, burns less gas. It was a PITA going from 1st to a enemic 500rpm 4th gear, especialy when you weren't paying attention and started to go up a hill

It was easy to disable on F-bodies.. a few wires. Dunno about the viper, but it can't be too much different.

It should be noted that the computer has a cut-off of when it disables the CAGS on it's own. Yes, holding first a little longer will disable it..because the car thinks it's in acceleration mode. Under normal parking-lot driving, if the RPMs in 1st are low, then the CAGS stays in place. A blip of the throttle will fix it, but the added noise and attention can be both good and bad

Does the Vipers T-56 have the reverse lockout? I remember that on F-bodies, the RLO was tied into the cooling system's power... when it blew a fuse, you would overheat because it killed the bank of fans! **** solinoid...

I agree its time for a skip shift eliminator for me!
I have read a few threads on this before, hope someone can refresh my memory. Which shift eliminator can you use and how much should you pay. I think I remember someone using Camaro version for about $30 VS $70 for the Viper one. Can one of you guys set me straight.

Thanks

Yes, Summit Racing sells the skip shift eliminator, pt. no. JET-61610 for $29.69. Call 800-230-3030.

They may tell you the part is only for GM cars and not a Viper.
MANY, Viper owners, including myself, have this part from JET and it works just fine. The yellow arrow will still go on and off, but there will not be any gear lock out, forced skip shift, or SES light.
