Muffler Delete Pipe with Glass Packs?

Have an opportunity to switch to a muffler delete pipe that has two small glass packs. Is anyone aware of the manufacturer, might be older Snakeoyl piece, but can't find any info. Higher flow, deeper "rumble" appealing to me, but would like to ID who makes/made the pipe, if anyone knows.

Thanks very much.:2tu:

Okay, funny, that is how it was described to me....its a replacement pipe like the muffler delete, but seems to have two small glass packs on it...makes the sound deeper. Since, right now, don't really want to invest in upgrades to the car, this seemed like an inexpensive change. Only reason its available is that the owner changed from 2 1/4" stock diameter to 3".

If I like the sound, then all I have to do is add hi-flow cats and I'm set.

Did want to see if anyone knew who the manufacturer was....just for info purposes.

Thanks.

do it! i cont believe your still running the stock system:)

this mystery exhaust, have a pic?

Keep in mind, There are plenty of owners that have had custom exhaust work done. Not all of us need the Brand Name when the same thing can be fab'd up and installed at a local shop for half the cost especially with something simple like a rear muffler delete.

Good point Dom, didn't think of that! I see it as an inexpensive way to add a "little" performance and, at the same time, improve the sound a bit.

Thanks for the tip.

Much appreciated.

I know, I always associate that term with the old muscle cars of the 70's....that was the thing to do with a nice set of headers.

That's why trying to get a handle on what it is...if it is a branded piece, like Snakeoyl, or its a madeup piece. I actually don't care, as long as it has the type of sound I want. Not sure what a 10 cyl will sound like, as Vipers have a sound unique to them. My other option is to go with the x pipe replacement which is basically a straight pipe exhaust. I did think that having small mufflers might give it a deeper rumble.

Fitzgerald Motorsports used a similar set up on their Viper performance package. If I recall the glass packs were Cherry Bombs. They do sound a little more aggressive over the stock muffler.:usa:

Thanks Shelby, that's great info...will check it out.

By the way, love the name...gave it to my daughter! Such great auto history in that name.

Thanks again.

I found their website, they are located in Laconia, NH. They list cars for sale, but do not show anything for parts/performance parts.

Any idea how long ago this package was offered...is it still offered?

Thanks very much for any help you can give.

3,4,5,6,8,10,12. They all sound different. A 10 will never sound like an 8 or 12. We know you are dying to mod and the stock exhaust sound sux. Save your money until you can do it right. Get a Corsa from jon b with high flow cats. Headers? Easy in/out HF cats? Cat syms? Wait until you can do it right. Yes there are take off corsa and others out there at vendors like parts rack Jon B. If you don't care, & you really think Glass Packs are a way to add "a little performance" just do it.
This really does sound like a cheap way to get that go fast seat of the pants feel.

Yup, I get all the comments....this is just an interim step and came up as I was looking into a muffler delete as first step. I don't see it as a performance mod, just a way to add a little better sound. Hi-flow cats would be next step, but not sure when that would be.

This is an easy, inexpensive throw away mod and I thought it might sound better/deeper than just a straight muffler delete and certainly better than the stock muffler.

Thanks for the input.

Peter,
Dan Fitzgerald retired a few years ago and I believe closed or sold the dealership. Back in the mid 90's they were one of the biggest Viper dealers in the country. Their latest performance catalog I have is from 1995. It lists their off road exhaust for a Gen-1 at $1,400. The picture shows glass packs and pipes with no cats. The cats were another $300. The Gen-2 system is similar but I have no price on them. The Fitzgerald 96 RT/10 rear exhaust that I drove had a nice aggressive sound to it. Much more so than a snakeoyl muffler delete system which I also have driven on more than one occasion. As Frank some what pointed out get what makes you happy. I think your 98 with the glass packs would give that 708 cam some noticeable definition at idle without spending the big $$$$ on a high end system. Any good muffler shop should be able to duplicate the Fitzgerald system for a reasonable price. Not much to it just 2 glass packs and some pipe. :usa:

Thanks, that's great...the info is very helpful. Sounds like it is something I should do, as priorities and the economy has put the RT way, way down the list. Anything I do in the short to medium term (if anything!), has to be reasonable in price. To wait for a time when I "can do it right", could result in me never doing anything at all.:eater: Not an excuse, but two young kids, a house and retirement all add up to the RT being low "man" on the totem pole. My wife is and has always been very supportive, but family first and the RT is strictly my toy.:headbang:

Much appreciated.

Explaining Viper things to you
If this cherry bomb system you originally inquired about is a freebie, and all you have to lose is the install time, why not just do it and report back with a sound clip?

Will do, Dave. For me, its a no brainer...just a more PC straight pipe system. Then, when I go with hi-flow cats, should have almost no backpressure, but not drown out my radio....love to drive with music on.

Thanks for your, uhhhhh, helpful comments...:rolaugh:

Picked the car up from Chuck's place yesterday after he made the change to the muffler delete pipe with glass packs. Pretty sure this is the rear pipe section from Fitzgerald Motorsports performance exhaust package.

Has two very small, about 8-10", glass packs close to the ends and chrome tips.

I've heard lots of different exhaust combinations, some a bit loud for my taste. While not much of a performance mod, it gave me the nice deep tone I was looking for and louder than the stock muffler.

Chuck cleaned the piece up for me before installing and it looks really good.:2tu:

If I do anymore exhaust work, it will be to add hi-flow cats.

Can't do sound clip, since we bought a new HD video camera and we can't figure out how to work with/save the HD format file. If I can find the charger to the old camera, I'll do a sound clip with that.

Thanks for all the comments....even Dave's:lmao:

My 2000 GTS has only 1 spiral flow muffler under each side sill and a pair of them where the stock muffler was located at the rear. I cut off the stock exhaust tips from the original setup then welded them back on after the spiral flows at back. I must say sound is very crisp and only loud at 4000 plus RPM. Not a cop attraction at all. I like the spiral flow do to is similar size to the cherry bomb but without any glass packing. Only a spiral insert inside the muffler. Vipers without cats seem to crackle a bit during decelleration this will eventually blow out the glass packs. No worry with the moroso spiral flows. Just my 2 cents.

Well, seemed like an easy mod and the price was right. Figured have little to lose and more to gain. If I liked it, would just have to do hi-flows down the road and would be done. Pipes came with slant-cut chrome tips, which also is an improvement over the stock (plain steel) tips.

For the amount that I actually drive the car, I think the glass packs should last quite a long time...if not, guess the car will get a bit louder, which isn't all bad!:D

Thanks.

Here are a couple of pics of the "new" muffler delete pipe with chrome tips and glass packs...and, yes, the bottom of the car is dusty...I'll clean when spring arrives:

Chuck was great, before installing he polished the chrome tips and painted the glass packs....he's da man!

Funny Plum, haven't been under the car for awhile, so forgot all about those....but, never really thought about replacing ALL the screws on the car....hmmm, maybe after the RT, I can start replacing all the nails in my sheetrock and changing them to stainless, then I can start on my TVs, then the home theater system, maybe the faucets in the bathrooms.....
