Man in critical condition following Socastee car crash - Breaking News - TheSunNews.com

One man is in critical condition following a three-car crash Monday night on S.C. 707 in front of Socastee High School.
At about 5:10 p.m., the driver of a Dodge Viper, Ray Herlocker, turned across both northbound lanes and was struck in the passenger side by two sport utility vehicles, said Cpl. Paul Brouthers of the S.C. Highway Patrol.
Herlocker was taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center and as of this morning he is in critical condition, according to hospital spokeswoman Joan Carroza.

The driver of one of the SUVs Ruby Rodgers was also taken to the hospital, Brouthers said. Her condition was not immediately known.
Highway Patrol is investigating the crash but no charges have been filed, Brouthers said.
"The guy that contributed to the collision was the man in the dodge viper and he's in the hospital so there's no reason to make a charge at this time," he said.

From another source:
SC Highway Patrol says a Dodge Viper driven by 61-year-old Ray Herlocker from Myrtle Beach was crossing traffic on SC 707 going northbound when his car was struck just after 5.
Herlocker had to be extracted from his car.
The other person hurt was 57-year-old Ruby Rodgers, also of Myrtle Beach.

Crossing two lanes of traffic? Something tells me there's more to this story.

I'm sure you'll get the usual catch all...should go to a driving course or take it the track.

"Look Both Ways before crossing, Left-Right-Left " is not something we teach at High Perf Driving Schools.

A similiar event happened 2 years back, but the Viper was PUSHED into cross-traffic, hit from behind by a Jeep.....and that Viper had its tires cocked left anticipating the turn(another no-no) Keep your tires straight til you are actually turning

Hope all parties emerge OK.

Can this one be attributable to the cold, in Myrtle Beach?

NC is freezing cold this week. If SC is the same, cold can be the cause

Yeah, thats it: Old Tires, Cold Tires. "He woulda made it across, except for old-cold tires resulted in wheelspin"

Here I Sit,
Broken hearted.
Tried To launch,
Could not get started.

Hope all recover quickly

Weather here (and on the coast) was cold and windy on Monday; no way to know if that played a part, though. The driver may have either misjudged the speed of oncoming traffic, or, if turning from a stop, may have stalled partway through his turn.

Hope the guy comes out of this OK; does anyone in Carolinas region know him?

His name is quite unique, and there was a former NASCAR car owner in the same area back in the 60's by the same name. Wonder if the Viper owner is his son.

Here's hoping for a speedy recovery.

Just a quick update for everyone. We got an email from somebody acquainted with Mr. Herlocker. He passed away from his injuries several days ago.

Prayers and best wishes to his family. This is a horrible time of year to lose a loved one (not that there is ever a good time, but this is particularly bad.)

It doesn't sound like there was any conclusive evidence as to what lead to the crash.

RIP Ray Herlocker.
