I am looking at buying a GTS this week, and would like one that is already modded so I don't have to start spending time and money on a project. I am right now looking at either a Roe Supercharged GTS with a full exhaust and rockers, or a NA 501 stroker. Both are priced about the same, the stroker has 18,000 fewer miles.

I assume the stroker is going to be more reliable, since its a bottom up build? Although I know plenty of guys with ROES that are happy and have put thousands of miles on them. Which is better??

Car would only see street driving. Blown car has 37k miles, stroker has 14k miles, build done at 8k.

Disturbed 01 on the other forum has his 2001 GTS w/ 510 stroker forsale. I think he wanted something like 39k for it.

for street use, all other things (like quality of build, tune, year, color, etc) being equal i'd go for the bling of the roe

if bling is not important and seat of the pants fun to drive is, i'd take the lower mileage stroker

either way, congrats on your impending acquisition :drive:

On the street it doesn't matter. Vipers make more power than most street tires can handle.

As long as both are built and tuned correctly either one will be a blast to drive. Get both. :D

Its probably important to know what other elements went into the stroker build. 10-20 more cubic inches ain't worth alot unless its accompanied by the right breathing and fuel delivery mods. The Roe car will likely make more power, but as others have said, either will be more than enough for the street. They'll likely drive very differently, why not drive both and decide based on how they feel to you?

What year are the cars? Stroker all the way, way more car for the $$$ and miles! More reliable if built righ also.
Only concern with the stroker would be the drivability of the cam. Make sure it's street able! Nothing more embarrassing than stalling at a light.

Both cars are the same year 2001. The owner of the 01 did say that the car takes a few extra secs to turn over when cranked, but that may be normal I have no way of knowing as the last two GTS's I owned were stock except for bolt ons.

My main concerns are reliabilty and being able to drive on the street. I don't care if its loud, my 1st Viper had a full Belanger exhaust and the lumpy 99 cam and I missed it greatly. I almost put a Roe on last one I had before I sold it to help purchase some investment property. So I would like a modded GTS to prevent throwing cash at it that I wouldn't get out later.

Are strokers bad to buck and surge? It is an RSI build. I have gotten some info from a local person on it and am waiting for a PM. Thanks

The bumble bee car was an all out build back in the day when all motor cars were blowing minds by running 9's. That is a one of two build, and it is done well. Sure they buck and surge down low, and they are choppy. I wouldn't want it any other way. I would jump on that car before you miss it.

Since both cars are 2001 i would deft go for the stroker! Its a built engine and should be more reliable in the long run.Tucker is absolutely right about the bucking and surging! Is it streetable? That all depends on your definition;)

The car is a monster. Streetable is subjective, but I would have no problem driving it on the street.

ALL OVER
Bucking has nothing to do with being stroked. It's all in the tune. Mine runs like stock but doesn't sound like it.

What year is the boosted car, and how many lbs of boost? I assume the boosted motor wasn't built? The stroker would strike me as a better purchase if you're looking at reliability, not so much because of the wear and tear on the boosted motor, but rather less moving parts to break. One guy made a good point about curb appeal of the Roe though, so something to consider there. At the end of the day, it all boils down to your taste.

If its an RSI stroker motor done right, that is the only way to go! I love roes but a good stroker will run with or out run a roe unless the roe has something special done to it. Also, a go running stroker on nitrous will run 9's. I think the most important thing is to find out the details of the stroker build and then a leak down on the roe. Roes tend to have detonation issues if not tuned properly especially installed on cream puffs. The creampuffs tend to lose pistons when a roe is installed. If the roe has upgraded pistons then the roe will be faster because you can run more boost.

One other point to consider, you can always add a roe to a stroker motor later if you need a little more. A roe is no where near as costly as a well built stroker motor. You can get a roe for $5k but a stroker is at least $10k. You can install a roe yourself in a couple of days but a stroker will take 6 weeks and not for the weekend warrior. INstall on roe $800-1000, removal and install on stroker $2-3k.

Good Luck.

What's the compression ratio?

There is a guy who I talked to about putting one of the new turbo systems Steve and myself are prototyping onto this car, but I do not know what is the compression ratio.

I'm really surprised that a stroked 510 with the best of everything doesn't make at least 600 rwhp.

It was tuned rich and safe for oklahoma 91 octane fuel. Im on the fence about even selling the car. If its still here when my duramax build is finished in a week or 2 I may just take it by to my tuner and turn it up. This tune made 858 and 1148 on the 200 hp jets. This is the same car that was on the banner ads on this site going 9.48 @ 149

If the SC model has over 5 lbs. of boost, perform a compression and leakdown test and borescope through the spark plug holes. The 2001's have cast pistions and are prone to piston crown failure if run hard at too high a boost level. Mine is currently at 5psi, (2000, GTS ACR, ROE 2.4 liter SC, 1.7 rockers, B&B engine to end, VEC II, water/**** injection - 520 WHP/555 lb.ft. torque). It came with 6.5 psi boost and was tuned on W/M, but I changed to a 5 psi pulley and tuned on gas only. I just use the W/M for intake charge cooling only. Will forge the bottom end next year and run boost to 8-10 psi with the ROE 2.8 liter SC (cam change, etc.)
