As many have already mentioned in this and countless other posts, owning a Viper isn't exclusively for the performance, although admittedly that is a large part of the appeal.
My opinion can be classified as that of one of two types:
1) Clueless wannabe (I don't own a Viper)
2) Unbiased outsider (I don't own a Viper)
I like to think I'm the second type.
If I wanted ONLY performance, and still stay within my price window of $40K - $50K, I would buy a used C5, drop $20K worth of mods into the engine, and run circles around Vipers all day long.
But at the end of the day, it's still just a Corvette, albeit a fast one.
This same argument can be made for several cars: Mustangs, Camaros, Supras, etc. etc. etc. but at the end of the day, those other cars are mass produced for the general market, and they simply don't have the flair, style or "Holy [******]!" evoking coolness of the Viper, and that is a simple fact.
I'm not an auto snob who believes his make/model is the One True Sports Car. I like cars from all eras and all different types for different reasons. I'm in the market for a 1951 Jaguar XK150 Drophead, and that sure as hell isn't for the performance. It's the style and uniqueness of the car that is appealing, not that it can do the 1/4 mile in 8.x seconds. Slap a V8 on a go cart and it will do the 1/4 mile in under 8 seconds, but I don't want that vehicle, either.
I plan to get a Viper because it best fits my criteria:
1) American made
2) Upper echelon performer
3) Timeless styling
4) Unique
5) Convertible (getting an RT)
Compare and contrast a Corvette:
1) American made (Yes)
2) Upper echelon performer (Yes)
3) Timeless styling (Hah)
4) Unique (Hah hah)
5) Convertible (Yes)
This can be done with several other make/models and the Viper simply comes out on top, while still fitting my price window.
When the new Vettes come out, people will "ooh" and "ahh" for the first year - mayb less. I did when I first saw the C5 in 1997. Now I pay them about as much attention as I do a Civic.
I've no doubt that when the Jaguar XK150 came out in 1951 there were other cars which could outperform it. But I'll bet few of those cars could still turn the number of heads today that the Jag can, and 40 years from now, and all the time in between, which will be the car making jaws drop?
Supra? No.
Vette? No.
Mustang? No.
Viper? HELL YES!
