Morning all,

After a 5 year's and a new user name I'm back as a Viper owner. I finally landed my dream Viper, and 97 b/w GTS. This is my 6th Viper, and 3rd GTS, however it has been 5 years since I've had one and I'm sort of out of the loop. The GTS I bought has a noticable transmission whine. It's more prevalent at low rpm cruising, 6th gear 75 mph, and it get's quiter as the tranny fluid warms up. I've had a transmission go bad on a GTS back in the day and this transmission feels fine. No miss shifts, never grinds, shifts easy, and never pops out of gear. My question is this, we checked the tranny fluid and it's very new looking. I know the car had all scheduled maintence done at a Texas exotic car dealership the last 2 years, including the tranny serviced at 24000 miles. It now has 25000 miles. From my experience with manual transmissions I believe it has the wrong gear oil in it causing a tranny whine. The fluid seems very light to me, but I've been dealing the A-833 hemi 4-speeds the last few years in my 69 Charger. What weight oil and or additive can be put in this tranny to help quit it down.

Thanks

I thought all the 1998 and earlier cars were filled with ATF Dextron III, unless you want to get rid of the NGR. I guess you could use either ATF or Castrol Syntorque.

I thought I read where the original fluid is not available anymore.

The official replacement for Dexron III is Mopar's ATF+4 (can be used in 92-98 Vipers...and MUST be used in 08-09 Vipers).

That said, you can also try the Mopar Synthetic Manual Transmission Lubricant 75W-85 as used on 99-06 Vipers(and for neutral gear rattle on 94-98 Vipers).

Our 97 b/w GTS tranny seems happy with Dexron III which I have changed every couple of years...though will switch to ATF+4 next time.

I may try the 75W-85. Maybe the neutral gear rattle is what I'm hearing. All my other Vipers had 15,000 miles or less. This is the highest mileage Viper I've bought.

We use the Castrol fluid in all Viper T-56 transmissions, 92 to 06. The part number for the fluid is Mopar 4874459 or GM # 12346190.

Hi

Do you still use ATF + 4 oil for the GTS 97r? Is the manufacturer code 68218058AA? MOPAR ATF + 4 5.946L MS-9602?

Thank you

MOPAR ATF+4 in 1 quart bottles is part number 68218057AC per the latest dealer chemical catalog.

The number you listed ( 68218058AA) is for MOPAR ATF+4 in the 5 Liter container...noting that the "AA" is now "AC".

I have yet to switch out our 97's fairly fresh Dexron III.

In my 97 I use ATF+4 (MS-9602, 68218057AA is Qt size) in my Transmission. I would also look to replace the Rear end **** 75W-140 and Friction control additive while you are at it.
