We took a little ride to the northern tip of the UP Saturday and meandered about. One of several we try to do every fall…..weather permitting. There were only a few of us on this trip, but you don’t need many to have a good time. We picked up some MCVO members in Houghton who chose to exercise their 725 RWHP Ford GT for the ride to the tip of the Copper Country. With his HRE 20/19 wheel package and Ford Racing exhaust, it’s definitely an attention getter.
The Keewenaw Mountain Lodge, where we ate lunch, happened to be packed last Saturday with two weddings scheduled and a bike race which originated there that day. We had to crowd the cars together for a group shot.
Mount Bohemia is an extreme ski area, no grooming, and has the longest runs with the highest vertical (900’) and deepest powder in the Midwest. ...that's with no snow guns. Once in a while they run the chairlift in the fall for a couple weekends. It’s pretty spectacular up there. Where the people are in this picture, it’s pretty much a precipice and drops straight off for those who wish to skirt the fringes of life on earth
From there we continued up to Copper Harbor, had a nice meal at the Keewenaw Mountain Lodge, and then drove up the Brockway Mountain Drive which has long been a favorite color spot for Michigan and the Midwest area. The Brockway Mountain Drive is the highest scenic roadway between the Rockies and the Alleghenies rising over 1300 feet above sea level. On a clear day, you can see Isle Royale...over 50 miles away. I took a lot of pictures, but these few gives you a pretty good idea of what the UP offers in the fall color season. Getting a nice day AND near peak color is not always possible up here.
