Laptimes for different cars
Here are some times for different cars. A quite interesting list to read.
The information was compiled and sent to us by David Mocnay, who got the times from the German car magazine Sport Auto. We send our thanks to David!

The laps where all done by the same driver on a dry track.

My only comment (make that my 2nd) is that the comparison would SEEM to be a bit biased since I will assume that a German driver would have MUCH more experience with Porsches than with the American made cars.

With a track that size I wonder how consistant the times would be within the same car. I would imagine each lap would be within a couple seconds but I'd still like to know.

There are a few cars, including the Viper, around 8 minutes 10 seconds, and 9 seconds. Above that is the top machinery in the world, very expensive stuff. I'd say the Viper compares well. Maybe a US spec Viper with an experienced Viper driver could do a little bit better.

The Nürburgring is a very hard curse,
or can you imagine why the whole world knows the "gruene Hoelle".
The winner of the 24h race this year, was a .....!!!
So all the porsche, ferrari and BMW was 1 Lap behind a self build Chrysler Viper GTS from the German Zakspeed-Team.
The Stock Viper is not build for racing( Think about the brakes and some other stuff), did anyone you know have to change the brakes at a porsche or M-BMW???
The Viper used in that test was a 450hp american stock version, the other thing is all Vipers that are sold in Germany are Chrysler Cars our vins Start with 1C...... and not 1B...... like yours, so we can only take these chrysler Vipers. But it`s real fun on the Autobahn!!! whatever it is a chrysler or dodge it`s a v i p e r.

Guibo is correct!

The numbers listed by allanlambo were compiled from tests done with the same driver - OVER A FIVE YEAR PERIOD - during different times of the year. As we all know, atmospheric and track conditions can vary quite a bit over a five year period. The results are interesting, but I doubt you could directly compare these results in good conscience.

Here are the details of the Viper test:
Horst von Saurma (D) Chrysler Viper GTS. 411 PS. 1567 kg
1997-10-01, sport auto Supertest 20.600 km 151.347 km/h 8:10. 000

The conversion for Pferde Starke (PS) to HP is PS/1.014 = HP

Given the date of the test, I expect the Viper in this test was a 405 HP European trim 1996 or 1997 GTS.

whatever it is, it still did very well. could you imagine living there though, and actually being able to drive up, pay 10.00 and go out on that track whenever you want? that would be awesome!

OK, that does it. Isn't Viper Days sponsoring or putting together something about a trip to Europe? If that's the case maybe somebody can get an official timed Nurburgring run for the group and scare the crap out of the guys holding all the P-car records!Yeah Baaaaby!

no way a stock ferrari f50 would beat a stock viper gts around any road course? haha thats funny.

Actually, a Viper on Pirelli M+S tires did beat a Ferrari F40 on slicks in the opening round of the Open Track Challenge, so...

I know, I know. Different drivers.

Given the same driver of professional level skill, I should expect the F50 to show its heals to the Viper.


Interesting note about the 550 vs. Viper scenario. According to that German test, here's how the two accelerated:
0-200 kmh (125 mph)
550 Maranello 14.2 sec
Viper GTS 14.6 sec

And at the highest speed portion of the track, the undulating nearly 3-mile long Doettinger Hoehe, the 550 Maranello hits 268 kmh (166 mph). The Viper manages 262 kmh (162 mph); my downloaded lap chart is kinda blurry, so it might even be 252 kmh, but let's just play along for a sec. The 996 Turbo hit 271 mph at this same point. Going by MT's '99 same-day Shootout:

1/4 mile
Viper 12.2 seconds @ 119.8
Maranello 12.5 @ 116.9

Standing mile
Viper 30.9 @ 168.4
550 Maranello 31.2 @ 168.0 mph

,the US-spec Viper should be ahead at Doettinger Hoehe, not behind. Indeed, even the 996 Turbo would have trouble pulling from the Viper in the 120-160 mph range: http://www.ultimateviper.com/docs/roadtests.html

WCKDVPR makes a valid point about test conditions. Not only will they vary from year to year, but they will vary from month to month, day to day, and even within the same day. One could test a car with the same driver once in the morning, and later on in the day, and get two very different times. And it's been said that even at the same instant, on partly cloudy days, one part of the track can be bathed in sunlight, while at the other end, it can be shrouded in cloud cover, offering very different surface temperatures. It is, after all, nearly 13 miles around and covers quite a bit of acreage.
For a testing venue, it offers manufacturers great insight on how their cars will perform on just about every conceivable type of cornering situation the car might ever face, be it on public mountain roads, or on a racetrack (although it doesn't quite have anything like Laguna Seca's Corkscrew). For comparison purposes between cars, it doesn't offer any definitive answers into which car will be quicker at any other track, although repeated lapping by the mags to get the best possible time certainly helps.
That being said, the former record holder, the 996 GT2, would be a tough car to beat by a stock Viper. Sports Car International somewhat demonstrated this in its comparo between the two cars, where Porsche specialist Johannes van Overbeek lapped Thunderhill Park in 1:59's. The best he could do with the Viper ACR was a 2:04. But to put that in perspective, consider what Steve Millen did last year for R&T at this very same track.

So as one can see, quite a few cars have swapped places. But I know...different drivers.

BTW, the current 'Ring recordholder is the Pagani Zonda C12S, recently tested by Sport Auto with a blistering 7:44.

sorry about the 550 thing, thought i saw f50. what about the murcielago? i heard it was in the 7.xx also. not sure what it was though?

That is correct. The Murcielago lapped in 7:50, only a few seconds off the pace of the GT2. The Murcielago is one of those rare, heavy AWD behemoths that is utterly composed in just about any driving situation (or so I've read). One magazine described it as a "gigantic go-kart", such were its reflexes and control. And in the tradition of Lamborghinis, it's quite the brash eye-catcher.

one thing that i dodnt understand is if you guys are saying the viper is approximately down 50hp from the u.s. version why are its quarter mile times both e.t. and mph pretty much in line with the best ive seen for u.s. cars.i know some of you have gone high 11's for et, but 120mph is about the highest trap speed ive seen.

the murcielago from what ive read really is an awesome handling and braking machine, especially for it weight. what suprises me most, is that a diablo gt, which is much faster than a murcielago in a straightline(3200 and change pds 567hp, 0-100mph in 7.7 seconds) lapped the nurburgring 14 seconds slower than the mercielago.

Exactly. The Euro Spec Vipers in 'stock' form are MUCH slower than our US Spec Vipers. Every Euro mag I read is frustrating, because the times on our Vipers are so slow.... 11.3 seconds to 100 MPH? I must be driving a VASTLY different car than those folks.... Also, if memory serves the Torque figures are waaaayyy down on these cars as well...

thats what i mean, but in terms of the nurburgring viper a 400hp car is not going to run 120mph through the 1/4.

Ah, but that's the thing. The Euro-spec Vipers are almost never in line with US-spec Viper acceleration times. For example, BBC TopGear tested their native Viper and got these results (compared with the US-spec Viper):

0-100: 10.37 (8.8)
0-150: 24.95 (22.5)
1/4 mi: 12.85 @ 112.95 (12.2 @ 119)

So as you can see, it's not really too close at all. In fact, the old 385-hp Z06 is on a par with the Euro Vipers, acceleration-wise. The current one is quicker still. And the that's not the worst of it. Autocar did a 0-100-0 shootout and the Viper GTS they tested (inexplicably shown as an RT/10 in their data panel) took 5.00 seconds to get to 60, nearly a full second slower than the US version. 100 mph was reached in 11.30 seconds, 2.5 seconds slower than most US-spec GTS's and the RT/10 tested by C&D back in '97.

Just as a point of clarification, I think the Euro Vipers made fairly similar torque figures, probably due to the displacement. They're choked at the top end, via restrictive intakes and different engine management settings (ECU).

I was only talking about the stock production cars. But you're right, that car currently holds the outright record for all stock and modified cars. There was a Gemballa-tuned Porsche that was a few seconds behind.

Agreed. As much as I admire the GT2, the Zonda is in a different league (and seems to have come from another world).

To my knowledge, no stock production Skylines have ever lapped below 8:28. Here's something that was relayed to me by a member at another forum:
"Acording to the official Nordschleife time table for street legal cars the stock Skylines have never went under the 8min time limit. In fact Nissan test driver Dirk Schoysman has set a time of 7.59 in a Skyline GTR R33 and a 7.52 in a R34. I don't really know on what configuration this cars were running but they were defintely not stock. Even very experienced R34 Vspec pilots never get it faster than 8.25. Probably the M-Spec might be faster but I defintely doubt that. Nevertheless such a time is absolutely astonishing for a car of that power to weight ratio.

For those of you who don't know there is a shortened Nordschleife. It depends wether you pass the new Nurburgring exit or not. If you do your lap time will be about 15-20 seconds quicker depending on the car you have."
