In light of the increasing requests for for code deciphering for the Gen 3 cars, I decided to look at purchasing a consumer model code reader to add to my tool collection (you can never have too many tools).

I was surprised at all the different brands of readers out there for purchase. Is there a particular brand/model that not only reads the code, but also translates the code number into english that is a favorite. What are the must have features and the nice to have ones?

I bought the one sold by Roe Racing ( http://www.roeracing.com/ProductCart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=23&idproduct=76 ) and it works fine. I was able to identify and clear the code I accidently caused myself when I fired up my car with the air-cleaner sensor disconnected on my Gen II. True, it only displays the code, but it comes with the little manual that translates the codes to something useful to you.

I've borrowed a "mac" one from the local car shop over the years. I wouldn't know the difference between this one and any others. Is there any difference between them?

Randy:

I guess you were charged the "regular" Viper "tax".

I personally don't know - I used it on a Gen II. The Roe Racing site says it works on "1996 and later Vipers" - no mention of just Gen II, and there are many other places on the site that do limit things to Gen II or Gen III. If there is any doubt, someone contemplating such a purchase may want to check first.

OBD2 (On Board Diagnostic 2) started in 1996 and conseqently an OBD2 code reader/scanner can be used on every car/truck manufactured since 1996.

Autozone will loan you a code reader that will display the code and a brief description of the problem. Very helpful.
