I've signed up for some hot laps at Road America for 2 days in April. My 97 GTS is basically stock with Kumho V700 and a brake upgrade. I've been told that its likely to spin a bearing due to oil starvation unless I upgrade the stock oil pan, baffles, ETC. I'd like to hear some opinions/experiences with regard to this situation. Also, what about running an extra quart of oil like many Z06 drivers do?

I also have a 97 GTS. I bought a 2000 oil pan (10 quarts instead of 8), and baffles from Jon B at Parts Rack. No problems at all. Works great.

Also use the torque not the HP.Short shift at around 4000 rpm or so.No need to wind it out.Problems occured at high rpm in a corner. Bruce

Hmmm no wonder I'm slow, I never let rpms fall below below 5000. I guess that is what the warrenty is for! I had all the tricks bigger pan, acr filter adapter, upgraded windage tray and it didn't matter.

I've done the ACR adapter, baffles, modified windage tray, and this is what I experience after heavy braking- It ingests oil back into the intake, and blows smoke right after. There is also this detonation kinda sound, that lasts for a couple of seconds, like the oily mixture doesn't like to be run through the engine.

I've got two more things to do one is to move the valve cover breather to the top of the valve cover, instead of the front, where oil can easily slosh into the intake under braking, and the second thing is to get an Accusump. I heard they supply oil pressure on demand, like if you are in a heavy-g force turn, it won't **** air, but get a constant supply of oil. Well, at least thats what I heard.

Now I'll go look at Daniel's product.

I had the same setup as Vic,and the oil into the intake is common. Vic DO NOT overfill the oil, I usually run 1/2 quart low, this occurs when there's too much oil, then you accelerate hard and then brake hard.

Pete,

I hope to be there to meet you and see the Viper outperform the other cars in the Advanced division!! There is also another Viper owner in the Intermediate group w/the initials T.S. who owns a '96 Viper GTS. Is it our own Tracy aka Birvini??

Cheers,

Jay K.

Hoosier Daddy,

I just hope all these people short shifting at 4000 rpm are not in our run group!

Pete,

I would get the big pan and ACR oil filter adapter for sure. The Accusump is good insurance.

Regards,

Hi Vic,

If you are having problems as so many other have had with ingesting oil, I strongly recomend an Oil catch, by any manufacturer. What you are hearing is in fact Detonation, as Oil decreases the octane rating of the burned gasoline and causes "Ping". Eventually, this can lead to problems, and should be taken care of.

PS- what you have heard about the Accusump units is 100% correct :2tu: I actually have 1 brand new unit in stock, as well as a Used unit. Please let me know if interested.

Thanks, SoCal. I did notice it seems to do it less when the oil level is near the lower part of the "Add-Full" hatchmark range on the dipstick.

GTS Bruce covered the solution.
Oil pickup is on the front of the motor
Under accleration and corning at high G's the oil pickup will **** air
Running street tires you do not need the accusump
Dot Hoosiers etc - install the accusump - Cost of parts is around $250 - cheap compared to the cost of a motor.

DO NOT overfill the engine - you will up Crankcase pressures
Do not run it a quart low either.

ACR adapter is a must do.

Braking - under hard threshold braking oil pukes into the airbox, clogs up your filters, robs you of HP, gets sucked into the motor - results in white smoke out the exhaust on acceleration - causes ping you spoke of which damages the cylinder walls. Forget the 'puke can' idea - waste of money
Block off the vents on the front of the Valve covers - intall 3/4" hose on top of Valve covers at least 1/2 the length of the Valve cover back toward the windscreen. Route hose to back of motor and to oil pan.

Revs - with stock valves and stock rockers keep rpm's under 5,200 - always - no exceptions
If you "Toe N Heal" make darn sure you don't over rev the motor when you blip the throttle to down shift.

Gavin:

you may want to run a quart low with the three quart accusump, otherwise, when it dumps the crank will be in the oil.
