When do you check the oil, when cold or hot?

if hot, do you fill just to the bottom of the safe level?

Let sit for 30 minutes , check and fill to top of safe mark. If tracking add 1 liter more. :)

Checking cold assures you that all of the oil is in the pan for a true reading. If checking hot, wait at least 15 mins for the oil to make its way down to the pan. The check with the car level. Fill up to the top fill line.

surely if you check cold and fill to the top fill line, when it warms up and expands it will be well over the top??

Keep in mind that when the engine is started, oil is pumped into the upper reaches of the engine thereby lowering the dipstick oil reading should it be checked at that time. Once the engine is shut off, oil returns to the pan and brings the oil level back up to the full mark on the dipstick. This is similar to why you check tire pressures when tires are cold (meaning after it has sat still for at least three hours).
