Just bought an 01 GTS 18k, called dealer and he said the factory recommended oil is Mobile 1 Tri Synthetic 10w30, which has been dicontinued. I'm told to use Mobile 1 5w40 or Penzoil 5w40. I really like what I read about the Castrol or the valvoline better then those 2, what is the best oil to use? Many thanks, Mark

Honestly to some degree oil is oil. Studies have been done that show if you change it at regular intervals that the brand makes fairly little difference. That being said, you should at least try to match weights usually and a synthetic is always a nice choice. Your use case can have a lot to do with it too though. If it's a daily driver or weekend cruiser vs a track car will certainly have an impact on what you like to use.

This is just my experience after owning a Auto shop for 40 years with a Sun dyno, oil type matters, we would see anywhere from 12 to 22 hp improvements just buy using a high quality oil that cuts friction, like Amsoil in the v10, the bigger the engine the more power gained from cutting friction. But for the average joe any name brand oil is fine.

the car came with mobil 1 10w30. just stick with what the factory recommends, they design the engine for that weight and full synthetic.
