With the market it is today, would you think to sell low to buy low to
get a newer year viper?

I would think an "older" car would sell low, but a more expensive "newer" car would sell even lower. The traditional big hit after the first few years of ownership (up to three years old?) is probably really big now. Might be a good time if you are looking for a 2005-06-07.

But that is applying "investing" theory to cars. Cars are never investments, they will always lose value, require maintenance, and gobble consumeables. You have to decide if you'll have more fun with a newer car vs. the older car.

I would keep what you have and add another Viper if you are considering one right now. That is what I just did, bought a Slate 06 vert last week at a great price to go with my 99 GTS. My theory is to keep both of them until the economy turns around, then sell one IF I need to, otherwise keep them both. If you sell right now you will lose serious money in my opinion. Even finance if you have to, interest rates should be LOW with the prime rate as low as it is.

Tom

If you want a new one - that makes sense - you pay the difference between the two.

Good times: sell 50K car to get 90K car = 40K diff

Bad times: Sell 40K car to get 80k discounted car = 40K diff

Its all how you look at it.

Hmmmm, you have at least 5 garage spaces, 3 cars and the boat in one space no doubt. Keep the RT, buy a new one and UPGRADE to a better boat and your other half will be fine with the whole deal!:rolaugh:

Yes, it is. Not to argue, but my point was that the older the car is, the less "lower" it gets year over year. At the extremes of this example, we all hope that the oldest cars don't get any cheaper and the newest cars will always drop as soon as you drive it off the dealer lot. But I think the newer the car is, the quicker it's price will drop.

So my thinking is that in bad times you sell the old(er) car for 40K but get a new(er) one for 75K.

I was assuming the rate of price decrease slows with age (doesn't a lot of things) and that in poorer economic circumstances (today) that the rate of price rate decline is higher than usual. It's also going to hurt to sit on a car and tie up the cash. I think that was the intent of the original question. And then he asked about opinions... so you are correct - It's all how you look at it!

Sigh....

If you're upgrading, it all balances out. The money you lose on a reduced sale you'll make up on a great buy. The only way to really make out in this market is to be just a buyer. If you're just a seller, you're going to take a hit.
