Popping sound coming from front drivers side wheel at takeoff

This happens only when I apply the brake pedal. It almost sounds like a U-joint issue, but I have narrowed it down to the Front drivers side wheel. If I apply the brakes and turn the steering wheel back and forth I also get a pop or two, but without the brakes applied, nothing. Also if I come to a stop using the E-brake and don't touch the brake pedal, I don't get the sound either. I haven't taken off the wheel to check this out yet, has anyone else had a similar issue?

id check the control arms. some have had hairline cracks. mine snapped on the highway, luckily at slow speeds. it was making that kinda noise before
