My new garage is well into the construction phase. For some background: I had the garage designed to match the architecture of our house, which added considerably to the cost of the project. Additionally, I wanted it to be a selling point for the property in the future. Since not everyone collects cars I wanted it to be designed to accomodate a large boat (popular out here but not for me) or a motor home (also not for me). Hence, it has one very large door (10' wide x 14' high) and a large bay with vaulted ceiling. It also has a small bay for garden tractor and other outdoor tools. On the second floor it has an apartment which will, of course, be my VIPER PIT. The garage itself will hold 5 cars. I have plans for special lighting and a sound system as well.

My older son, who has a degree in computer graphics, set up a web camera and a website so that we could follow the progress from any location. I can check it from my office. The image changes every minute. In the end, we will have a time-lapse video of the entire project from start to finish. Anyone interested can check it out by going to this link:

Let me know what you think.

Bob,
Very cool !
the idea of the apartment above is awesome.

My new home will have a 3 car attached garage but this additonal
garage will be my next project.
The apartment will come in handy just incase the children are home from college, etc.

If you dont mind, ballpark what does a garage with an apartment cost? Of course, just the structure, not the add ons like awesome sound system.

good luck with the project

That is too cool. How much does it cost to have the web cam operating 24 hours a day? Forgive my ignorance for I am technologically challenged.

The apartment will also come in handy when I'm in the dog house! Actually, I'll probably sleep out there with my cars frequently.

It will probably end up costing me around $80,000. I had bids as high as $120,000!!! (I think they saw my cars and tried to jack me)

garolittle:
Web cam costs about $20 to set up on the internet. It'smy son's camera so I don't know how much it cost.

Garolittle -- the web cam itself is usually very cheap (under $50), although with the image quality Bob has, it looks like he got some good ones (probably around $70). Once you hook it up to a PC, you just have to pay for a website somewhere and find (or write) software to periodically upload the pix to the site. There are a whole bunch of different ways to accomplish that. Of course, that only applies to a "still image" setup like Bob's. To run actual video from a site is quite a bit more complicated and expensive.

Thanks JM

Mark O:

This garage is my "show" garage. My other attached garage (4 car capacity) will house my daily drivers and all of my "stuff". At least this is the plan. If I decide to get a lift it will go in the attached garage.
