Re: question on buying slightly damaged \'02 viper (new)

Well considering there fixing it for FREE I don't see where it would make that big on a price difference either way. Just my two cents.

I dealt with Jeremy at Northwest and he was very honest - GREAT to deal with. He always kept me informed on my purchase and condition on my car. I think he was even more picky than me!
If you can live with the repair and they make the right deal, I don't see a problem.
Good luck!

We'll if they are going to fix it, then it will have "paint work". That will devalue the car right away on any resale. -1500

Then the car has been left outdoors in the rain, this is amazing, no wonder they have not sold it. -500

If the car has more than 10 miles on it, -100 for each additional mile. Remember, those are going to be REAL hard miles on a car that has not been broken in. Dealers love to joy ride Vipers.

So at this point you should be way under invoice, if not, you can buy a brand new one, never driven, never in the rain, no damage...if you shop around.

As far as the Corvette goes, I also traded one in ('01 Z06) and took a beating. But I have never had a second thought about it and would do it again in a heartbeat. There is an intangible in the Viper that is not there with the Vette, I cant explain it but you would feel it after buying the Viper.

Justin - If we're talking about a small dent with no panel/frame damage then I'd try to lowball the price and count any discount a blessing. The only depreciating thing would be the repainting job and dent removal. If the dent is big and/or body altering the price would reflect.

The biggest hurdle I see with any vehicle is dealer trust. Since its obvious you trust the dealer then I'd just start throwing numbers out and see what bites.

As for the car being parked outside - unless its an RT without a top I don't see how that could affect the value. Its a car. Its water resistant. If you're using it for a daily driver you can't really justify acid rain damage and clear coat fade.

Regrets are the most horrible of punishments. If you like it and can afford it - buy it. If you trust the dealer to repair the damage - buy it. If you're going to spend the rest of your days thinking about the dent that your car had back in 02 - call woodhouse.

A discount would be nice - probably $300-$500. Sounds like there was some damage to the side sill. That is probably going to be inevitable anyway on a daily driver with things getting kicked up from the front tires. HOWEVER, since that piece is aluminum, I'd want to see the repair before I purchased it. It's a little tricky to work on aluminum.... and it might not come out like you want it.

Then, if the repair is fine, go for it.

Re: question on buying slightly damaged \'02 viper (new)

Of COURSE this car should be discounted... why?

Because if you can get one that has NOT had any work done to it, then it will ALWAYS be worth more than one that has had work done to it - I can't believe anyone would think otherwise.

If they are going to replace the sidesill with a new one, it will look perfect, but will still have had work done to it. It may not change the price much, but it will change the price somewhat.

The rain is a non-issue.

If you can get the car for $500-$1000 less than the best deal anywhere else, then go for it. If they won't go for that, then why not buy the car somewhere else for an extra $500 or $1000 and it will be factory new. When you go to sell the car, are you going to lie and tell people it never had any work done to it? People don't categorize the severity of "work done" later on down the line. Either it had work done or it didn't. If you tell someone it had work done but it was only removal of a dent in the sill, will they wonder if you're telling the truth, or maybe you spun out and hit a curb with it? You see where I'm going with this?

A brand new car with ANY "work" done to it is worth less than a brand new equivalent with no "work" done to it.

If you do buy the car, make it contingent upon your acceptance of the repair. Out of maybe 10 past experiences with body shops that were supposedly "the best around", I have been satisfied exactly one time. EVERY other time I was able to notice the work had been done. I do some body work myself and I know I am very picky, but if you can tell it's been done, it's a crap job. Make sure you SEE the completed work before you commit a penny to this car.
