Quietest high-flow mufflers?

My car currently has Power Effects mufflers, which are considerably quieter than the bullet mufflers which came with my Belanger cat-backs. However, with the new heads and CDI headers, the car is still pretty loud on their "quiet" setting, and is downright anti-social on the "performance" setting. I had a friend do a WOT fly-by last night with the mufflers open, and it just about made my ears ring. I'm contemplating swapping the PEs for some much quieter mufflers, but I don't want to sacrifice any of my hard-won performance, either on or off NOS.

According to the Power Effects website , their mufflers flow 247 CFM "closed" and 596 CFM "open". I have two of them, one per exhaust tip. So..... recommendations / suggestions for QUIET mufflers for a 600 RWHP Viper?

TIA!

Addendum -- I just spoke with Don from Borla, who recommended looking into adding a pair of oval 3" mufflers inside the side sills directly behind the 3" cats. Has anyone else tried this? Results?

That's where the XR1 mufflers are for the Borla cat back system. They place the mufflers there and use a straight pipe rear assembly. I'm not sure how quite the exhaust would be if you had high flow mufflers in both places. I believe the stock set-up has mufflers both in the side sills and in the rear section.

I have all most the exact same set up as yours. I purchased the Belanger cat-back which was far too loud. So I replaced the rear mufflers with power effects tunable muffler. Still too loud. So I added the Borla mufflers in the side sill that came off a Borla cat back system. It's OK now in quiet mode rather loud in open position but I still don't like it. So I ordered a 3" Corsa cat back, should be here in less than 2 weeks (i'm #4 on the list

) I just don't like really loud noises my ears are sensitive I guess. The Corsa are the only ones that seem to rely on technology to quiet the exhaust rather than old fashioned fiber glass/woole. I hate the thought of loosing 20 hp to keep the tunable mufflers in quiet mode.

My conclusion is your not going to find a quiet high flow muffler for the Viper. Just not enough room for a nice 8" X 16" oval muffler which is what you would need to do the job.

BTW I'm going to have my 3" cat-back for sale soon as described above asking $1,200 plus shipping (half cost)

Ben, I think you want the Corsa's. Check out their web site, with their 3" cat-back on a 2000 ACR their quoting 18 more HP. at the rear wheels! To get that kind of HP with just a cat back those must be high flowing mufflers. I'm still waiting delivery of my 3" Corsa.

Ben, are the powerfx muffs bolton? I've been considering just replacing the rear muffler and gettng some nice tips rather than a full catback system since I'm just looking for a sound and outside looks boost right now.

This is an interesting thread. When purchasing my exhaust, my constraints were: that I needed the loudest performance exhaust. I ended up going with TNT's cat-back with no mufflers. Different strokes for different fokes. Good luck finding the correct application for your interests. Maybe when I drive down to FL I will stop by for a listen. Later,

The Power Effects mufflers are semi-bolton; you have to weld flanges onto your exhaust tubing upstream and downstream of the mufflers, and after that the mufflers bolt in & out.

Actually, the noise doesn't bother me at all. It does bother my wife, and after hearing the car at WOT as an observer, I suspect it bothers every non-enthusiast I drive near. There should be no performance loss if I add 3" straight-through design mufflers in the side sills, and that is also robably the least expensive way to quiet the car down. The only question is whether, since I'm already going down this path, I should just get a Corsa 3" system and add the side-sill mufflers to that system. That's really a sound quality rather than quantity decision...

Just got a call from Corsa and my 3" is on the way. I will let you know my impressions of it. I believe from Corsa's pictures that they come with two mufflers one in the side sill and one in the rear.

Does the 3" Corsa Cat-back bolt-up to the standard Viper Cats? Or is the 3" model only intended for cars with headers and either no or high-flow cats?

ACR Jim, I had asked the sales person about the size of the fitting he didn't seem to know. I was told you can chose either a stock size or 3" but seeing how mine is on its way to me and I never made the choice I would guess its stock 2 1/2" I have a 3" all the way from the headers back on mine. I'm planing on having it welded regardless so it don't matter to me. If it comes with a 2 1/2" neck down I will cut it off and weld it up.

The 3" Corsa comes with a reducer that necks down to fit the stock 2 1/2" cats. I think Jon B also sells a "true" 3" Corsa without the reducer for people with 3" cats, although I think it's pretty easy to remove the reducer from the regular Corsa system anyway if you get 3" headers/cats later.

MES (you have this from my Dyno results),
Others,

My 3"Corsa came with neck down to stock cats, as I understand it, it comes either way, order specific.

Here are the Dyno Numbers obtained Wednesday, 6/5/02. The ONLY addition to the car, from the previous runs, was the addition of Corsa 3" CAT BACK. I can post the Dyno sheets, but probably not necessary. The car has Smooth Tubes, and Sean Roe Air Filters, and were on the car for both runs. Again, ONLY the Corsa 3" Cat Back System was added for the run, (#2) today (No Headers, or High Flow Cats).

RUN #1 03/30/2002
RWHP 401.1
RWTQ 459.1

RUN #2 06/05/2002
RWHP 405.0
RWTQ 468.1

Was I disappointed in only a small gain?, perhaps a little, but the torque stepped up, and the sound is superb. My wife said the exhaust was quieter inside (road noise the same, no windows in), I agree, but out the back, just as nasty only a deeper pitch sound. I must mention the ease of installation; On jack stands (the car, that is), on my back (me).
I agree, the sound is great, and the real choke point on the exhaust side is headers and Cats.

I also received this from another member:

"Corsa 18 HP claim is BS. On my 2001 Creampuff, stock except for smooth tubes & S&B Filters:

Before (9800 miles): 406 HP, 448 torque
After (14000 miles, add Corsa 3-inch, RT hi-flow cats): 414 HP, 452 torque

However, I am 100% pleased with Corsa exhaust: good sound at idle, no drone at cruising speeds, great sound when you get on the throttle, great tips, fit perfectly. As far as additional HP, I didn't expect any, didn't really gain any. The dyno test after the exhaust installation was strictly for research purposes.

Overall, I would heartily recommend the Corsa to anyone."

Ben, think about throwing some high flow cats in there if you gutted the cats in the 1st place?

Ben,
You can call Rob Tynmann at Axis Industries. He has a fix that can tame the roar to a very stealthy whooosh.... 'course with your mods it might make your car about down right scary.

Strange dyno numbers. I had 1200 miles with Corsa and K&N and my car dynoed at 430RWHP. I don't think that stock 2002 would be able to put down this much. I belive that Corsas claim is true.

quote:
What if you put a Corsa resonator in the side sill. That is supposed to take care of all the drone. At least on the Corsa set up.

I have no idea what would happen. The Corsa has 2 mufflers (per side) one in the side sill and one in the rear. I don't know if they are both the same or if one is for the drone. All I do know for sure is no matter what muffler you put into the side sill you WILL have drone, unless you get the Corsa.

The unit behind the cat in the Corsa system is the resonator. It is designed to remove drone by some kind of wave cancelling technology. I believe any system would be OK with the resonator in place. You might be able to get one from Corsa and just weld it in.

Just a guess but I would give it a try, has to be cheaper than going to a whole new Corsa system. Try calling JonB and see what he says.

Belive me the drone is still there with Corsa and no cats. At about 2K-2.5K is so loud that you have to rev it up or go to the next gear.

Elite1,
I went with the snakeoly rear muffler delete.
this should be just what your looking for.
I love mine.

I will not change my exhaust to a corsa until I have the
chance to listen to them side by side.
Maybe this summer with all the new viper owners
in my area
