If I set my Raptor shiftlight to come on at 5200 RPM, it comes on at 5600. If I sent to come on at 4800RPM, its coming on around 4500RPM. But if I set it real low at 1000 or 2000 RPM, it works perfect. All connections are good and I'm tapped into the yellow w/grey tracer wire thats in the black plug of the PCM just like I was told to a couple months ago when I posted about installation help. I've had this problem since day 1, but just havent been using the shiftlight. Help?

I'd suggest checking your ground and positive voltage connections also. Perhaps change where they are connected, at least temporarily. Noise could be getting into the circuitry on any of the wires and fooling it.

If that doesn't work ask for a replacement, that usually gets help.

Only problem I have with mine is that sometimes it comes on very early, like 2000rpm even though it's set to 5500 rpm. Most of the time it works fine, but probably once every 5 times I start it, it comes on early. Weird.

WOW, that's a 20% failure rate; would you stand for a 20% tire failure rate or anything else for that matter??

Later,

Later,

My thoughts exactly! 20% is better than my 100% failure rate, but I'd be upset even at 20%. I know the power supply is good, but I will change the ground location and see if that helps. I bought mine used so I doubt the company will offer a replacement, but I'll drop them an email and see if maybe this is a problem theyve heard of before and is a easy fix.

Chad - how did you connect the wires/leads? I'd check the ground. make sure you are soldiered connections or using butt-connectors.

if it doesn't work for you, i'll take it back. i removed it from car and it was working fine!

OK guys.

It's well known, at least I thought so, that the factory tachs are not as accurate as they could be. The Raptor reads in real time, no delay, no lag with a maximum error of 10 RPM at full scale. The factory tach is analog, mechanical movement, prone to error. If you want true rpm indication, believe me, trust the shift light. It has been verified by numerous instruments to be very accurate.

The problem for the tachometer gets worse under first gear hard acceleration, where the tach simply cannot keep up with the engine rpm. I've seen this countless times on drag cars, bikes, etc.

Just thought I would clear this up.

I have some scope traces of the ignition pulse, and it ain't pretty. It is amazing that any rpm reading circuit can pick up the ignition pulse.
