I just bought a new 2006 Coupe. I am new to vipers and have tracked Corvettes and Porsche 911s. I was told that if I was going to track my car, I would need to replace the stock oil pan and oil pick up tube with a baffled oil pan and articulating oil pickup because the viper starves for oil at high G forces during cornering. Is this true?
If it is true, how could Dodge build a sports car with such a flaw and such an easy fix? I priced out the parts to be about 1800 dollars plus labor to install.
Also, would such a modification void my warranty on the engine? Im not very happy with this right now. Thanks for any input on this matter, Im hoping I was given bad advice and tracking the car wont be a problem.

Thanks,

Flash

The search function can take care of all your questions.

If you are going to seriously track the car you need to get the comp coupe swingarm oil pickup. If you do the occasional track day on stock tires and the occasional autocross you should be ok, but why push it?

This is especially true if the course has long sweeping turns.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll replace the pan and the pickup with the racing versions. Do you guys think that would void my warranty?

The problem is high G left hand turns and left hand turns that go up an incline. I have not found right handers to be a problem at all.

Void your warranty? I don't know, but, I doubt it, it's better than the stock pan and is not part of the emissions system (plenty of folks put on high flow cats and headers).

Great person to speak to about this issue is Dan Cragin.310-841-6996 at the ViperShop in LA. He has had lots of engines apart, and knows what causes oil starvation.

You can get the parts from him, PartsRack or any of the tuners that support this board.

Reason Dodge did not install this part from the factory is that their testing showed no oiling problems on their initial testing on street tires

Usually no problems with street tires, but going with something stickier aggravates the problem.

Easy, but messy do it yourself project. Most have ordered the comp coupe oil pan, but you might want to ask Dan if something else might be even better.

Dan usually shows up at the local ViperDays events to support members. Tell him you are a VCA member in case any discounts are available. Not a VCA member... contact club President, Tony Cappellano @ 951-359-0338 to get updated on all the local events.

Next event, especially designed for new members is this Sunday at the Carlsbad Outlet stores. 7:30 - 9:00 AM. We will hang out and stroll around the cool cars that arrive here. Kinda like a San Diego Crystal Cove. About 9:00 Viper people will go to Ruby's for Breakfast. Maybe a quick run afterwards.
Good way to meet all the local owners. Be sure to check out the SD Vipers group for info on San Diego area runs.

Tell em Paul Sent you.

Hey Flash,

If you make it to Carlsbad tomorrow, catch up to me and I'll go through some oiling stuff with you. I'll be in a Red / Silver Stipes GTS ACR tomorrow.

A small group of Vipers will be leaving OC from Lake Forest area about 6:15. We should be passing through Dana Point about 6:30 ish.

Catch us if you can.

I had it done on my 2006 but my impression was that it was not absolutely necessary for HPDE events or track days but just added insurance. I think the folks who experienced the oil starvation issue did so under fairly set circumstances such as tracks that featured very long high-g corners that created sustained g loads that led to a fairly rare starvation condition.

The Comp Coupe pan won't void your warrenty and it does not guarantee that you won't have a problem.
I spun 2 bearings and killed 2 pistons due to oil starvation. Yup it was a banked left hander at Pocono.
I run street tires for the record and always go 1/2 qrt over fill after getting to the track and letting the car sit a bit.
So it can happen with or without the pan...but I still think it is a good idea to it especially if you plan on getting addicted to the track.
BTW all repairs were under warrenty.

Isn't there a retrofit or one in the making of the 08 oil setup for the previous versions (03-06)? I seem to remember someone making one or testing the feasibility of making one.

Yep, those are all through us. Puts the Comp Coupe system to shame, and its CHEAPER to boot.

Have sold a TON of them with excellent results. Save one installation issue which has long since been corrected, there has not been a single issue with them on any of the cars, regardless of what kind of rubber, power or use they are subjecting it to. (and most of these guys are track nuts).

Better, cheaper, what's not to like? Tell us more, how do we get this? I need to retrofit the 03 as it will serve backup to the 08, and I never did the comp coup version, as I know people who did it, yet still blew an engine...

Dan, can you point us to the post or your website that details your solution? Thanks.
