Its official. The big recall is here. I am on the phone wiht DC as we speak. The rep has confiremd the recall. According to DC there are several repairs that can be done depending on the damage (if any) to the car. It could include welding. On 5/16/02 DC issued recalls #998 and 999 (depending on the year of your car) for the Steering and Differential Frame Repair. The dealers and owners will not get mailings on this recall until next week to the first week in June. You can call DC at 1-800-992-1997 if you need assistance in facilitating this repair. Then, call up your dealer, tech, get the parts in and schdedule an appt. Your snakes are gonna go to the doctor!

The NHTSA Recall No. 01V312/DaimlerChrysler Recall No. 998,
Viper Recall for Steering and Differential Frame Repair.

Does the rear end have to come out for this repair?I have a set of HD half shafts waiting to go in for free if it does.

Yah, thats my Q too...If welding is required, one would think that the 1/4s, rear facia, sport cap, entire trunk tub, gas tank/battery would need to be removed...arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

Guys,
I have no idea to any of your answers. Apparently even DC (since the number listed isnt a tech line) doesnt even have the answer. They faxed some information to the dealer. They said that the Viper tech has to work with STAR to help determine the scope of the repair. I know this isnt much help. But like you, this is all I know. I made an appointment for the end of the week for this repair. They ordered the basic support reinforcement for the recall for me. they are assuming there is no cracking. My Viper Tech said he will make the call when he gets the car on a lift. I will keep everyone posted.

SmokinV10,
Thanks for the heads up! Not sure I want to be the first one at my dealership to have this done though.

I had mine looked at. No problems and I drag race with slicks occasionally. Might be too much panic here, if you don't roadrace with heavy stress, slicks, you could be wasting your time. Remember, there are not a lot of chassis fabricators in the service department. I'd hate to see what some of these "fixes" look like when you get them back. Cobbaa!!

STAY TUNED- Henry and another club member who owns a body shop (high end stuff - and he's rebuilt Vipers...) went this morning to look at the 72 page recall.

Our local dealer has begun quite an agressive campaign to notify folks that the recall is out. Very strange considering we NEVER hear from them otherwise.... I fear that this is being looked at as a cash cow for this particular dealership.

WIll post more info on the recall - they did tell me that a major repair allows for 43 (!) hours worth of labor - so let's be careful before anyone has this done.

Hopefully by noon, we'll have an overview of the procedure for:

 1.
Steering rack repiar (if necessary)

Differential Repair (if necessary)

DIfferential kit install (preventative)

What other folks (like Dave Jenkins) have said that this is a rare occurence. We inspect all these areas after each track event and have not seen any evidence of cracking / stress. We do quite a few track events, but DO NOT run Hoosiers. Personally, I would be VERY CAREFUL on which dealer you may select to perform this recall.

More later.....
