Anyone (Chuck Tator), know for a fact if the side sill heat shields are covered under the Max Care warranty? With 13,000 miles it seems ludicrous and need I sat unsafe that my insulation has failed. The insulation has been heated to the point of complete metal breakdown. This in my opinion is a complete design flaw and should receive further examination and replacement by Dodge. In truth one should be able to argue that since this is directly caused by an emission control device that it should be covered regardless of warranty.

The problem, regardless of warranty, is that the shields are not serviced separatly(spel?) but with the side sill.
At $4K per side,I will not be surprised if Max Care drag their feets.

I had both side sills replaced under the 3years/36K warranty for a slight paint problem( turning yellow due to the heat) and took the oportunity to wrap the cats/exhaust with a thin silica based "blanket" and have not had any problems since then.

Make sure the insulation hasn't fallen on the catalytic converter and is not directly conducting the heat. Ideally they're not supposed to touch. You may have to reglue the aluminium blanket to the sill if the silicone has let go.

Thanks for the replies guys. One thing that I must note is that wrapping the exhaust with any wrap is a bad idea. The first set of headers I built years ago was destroyed after only four months of driving. I built those headers out of mild steel which certainly doesn't have the ability to withstand temperatures as stainless does. Though those headers were not subjected to the temperatures generated within the side sills of the Viper. The problem is that the wrap works so effectively, that the tubes can't transfer the heat. The tubes will eventually crystallize and fail as the thin gauge side sill shields do. As far as the insulation not touching the cats, that is probably best performed in a lab, because my cats were literally press fit into those sills. I love this car.....but this type of engineering reminds me of british sports cars, and I really don't want to go there!
