I am seriously considering entering this "race" next September (right after VOI). It sounds like it would be a real hoot. Has anyone done it? What was it like and how did you do?
For those who don't know what it is - it is a 90 mile stretch of 2 lane highway (recently re-surfaced) north of Vegas which is completely closed off for the event. You choose an average mph for the course and then try to complete it as close to that as possible. Non-pro drivers, like most of us, can chose from 90 mph up to 150 mph as our goal. It has long straights as well as curves and twisties. You're allowed to have a navigator to help keep track of your time and alert you to upcoming turns, etc. If you get caught speeding on this stretch of road within the 90 days prior to the race you will be disqualified - so a practice run is not likely possible.

Who has done?

I've done this event several times. It is a fantastic, fun filled event.
The SouthernCalifornia club usually organizes a team of Vipers, who run in various speed classifications. We usually get together for dinner, and to stragegize. Newcomers get to share experience with veterans.
The Viper is the best car to drive in this event, as the high speeds are relatively easy for the car to achieve. Depending on rear gear ratio, either 5th or 6th gear is used.
RT-10's have top issues. On GTS's the windows tend to be pushed out by the inside pressures above 150 mph.

If you go, be sure to join up either at the hotel in Vegas, or at the Viper Corral at the Ely football stadium.

I did it for the first time this last September, it was an ABSOLUTE BLAST!
I ran in the 135 mph class with a top speed of 165!

It was a fantastic weekend, you'll have to go through a driving school and I would suggest going out to drive the course ahead of time.

Good luck,

2charmed,
I'm getting pumped up just thinking about it! What type of driving school is required? I have a high performance driving school certificate from the local track and several track days under my belt. Is that good enough or do I need to complete one sponsored by the event? Also, am I allowed to have a video camera mounted in the car?

Greg,
Thanks for the pictures!

Hi Bob,

You will have an absolute blast! Contact "Bunny" her number is on the SSCC website and she will be able to tell you if the class you have taken will be
good enough.

Cameras are no problem, I taped the whole thing, if you send me an e-mail with an address, I'll send you a copy of the DVD from my run! :)

Pretty fun 4 day party.

Tire pressure and good tires is pretty important as it is the usual cause of an off road problem. Make sure the rear quarter vents aren't blocked and that the flap is loose or you get high pressure on the rear hatch.

With just a fire ext you can run in the 110 mph class and go up to 124. Pretty lazy feeling in the Viper, though.

Add 5 point belts and you can get a GTS into the 150 mph class, that, by the way, has been owned by Vipers for a few years now.

They waived the driving school for us due to track time and driving schools. Some guys will get rental cars and make some real fun out of the school. Was that Golder?

Greg, how's that "extra" event coming along? Gonna actually happen?

2charmed,
Thanks for the DVD. I feel like I ran the race myself. Your Z06 sounds awesome. What exhaust do you have on it?

The road course looked fairly easy with no sharp turns. Makes me think that averaging at least 140mph wouldn't be a big problem in the Viper.

Thanks again!!!

I have done it 5 times. 3 in a Vette and 2 in my 95 Viper. You should not have any problems with 140 just make sure your tires are in good shape. I never ran it to win anything, just for the fun of running it. If you are going to try for a win you should have a navigator. The last time I ran it there was seven tenths of a second between first and fifth place in the 140 class. Good luck and if you want a really challanging run then try The Virginia City Hillclimb, that is a real kick in the ass.
