This is going to seem trivial but my MGW shift knob keeps loosening up. The knob has the squared sides at the base that you can put a wrench on but when I tighten it Old Pete is facing the wrong way. I tried backing out the knob all the way but the entire threaded lever backed out of the shifter and then wouldn't pull through th boot. So I started to undo the boot from the console and that started getting ugly. So my question is... can I just unscrew the lever from the knob and then adjust it or what is the easiest way to do this ?

There should be a stop nut below the shift knob. Adjust it accordingly, then tighen the knob down tight to it. If you don't have the stop nut it will continue to loose on you (been there, done that)... :)
