this just happened tonight. shifting from first to second if felt like i had a
little wheel hop then CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK, EXTREMLY LOUD. let off of it and it
seem to go along ok until i shifted again, same loud sound, FELT LIKE THE REAR WAS
FROM COMING THROUGH THE SEAT. stopped at a light to make a left turn, when letting
out the clutch and turning loud clunk, felt like rear was slipping. the sound
is worse when turning but makes the same noise when starting from a stop as well.
i think it has to be the rear gears or shafts, that is where the loud clunking
seems to be coming from. i can feel the clunking in my back, it almost pops at
times. HAS ANYONE HAD THIS HAPPEN TO THEM????????????

I CALLED MY DODGE DEALER RIGHT AWAY AND THEY ARE ABLE TO TAKE MY CAR ON TUESDAY
TO FIX THE PROBLEM, ITS UNDER WARRANTY (THANK GOD). i am going to have them pick
up the car - tow it on a flat bed. i think i could drive the car there but not
sure as i dont really know whats wrong.

SOOOOOOOOOO ANY IDEAS WHAT MIGHT HAVE HAPPEN, I WOULD BE INTERESTED TO HEAR
SOME OPINIONS ON THIS AND IF ITS THE REAR, SHOULD I ASK TO HAVE 3.55 GEARS
REPLACE THE 3.07

Sorry to hear about your bad luck, Tom. When you find out what it is, please post it. I doubt that the dealer would spring for 3.55's on a warranty repair. But if it is a user friendly service dept. they may do the free warranty labor with a set of Unitrax 3.55s if you bring a set in.

I assume you were getting on the gas pretty good when you shifted from 1st to 2nd. Seems you blew out your rear. The rear ends seem to be a real Achilles heel on the SRT's.

My 03 has been making that sound for about 2k miles. It is certainly worse when making a turn and letting the clutch out. Sound like something is going to give any minute. Dodge has already replaced the diff without any change. I'll just keeping driving it till it blows up.

That's too bad, I was looking forward to seeing you at Heffner's Saturday. Would have been nice to see what your car would dyno stock.

WANTED, forget the 3.55. See if your dealer will let you spring for the difference and have a comp coupe rear end installed. My 04 puts power down with no fishtail, exits corners under throttle more controlled, and does not act like it wants to get out of line with hard braking.

Ricky, remember me saying something about the 03 ?

Yep...Dodge should do a recall...we have the top of the line car they offer and this is what we get. I bet there aren't any AMG Mercedes drivers around that are complaining about this kind of stuff and theres no lack of hp there!

I hope your problem is not something as serious as what happened to me before when I had the 98 GTS. I experienced the same problem with loud cranking noise..noise got louder only it was came from the front. Eventually the dealership found out that the bearing was broke. Engine put in a crate box and sent to Arrow and waited for about 3 months for it's return. Good luck.

Been there, done that, twice. First guess, hydrolock failure. Second guess, week pin in differential. If you have you diff replaced, definitely don't let them put it back in with the stock cross pin. Call Unitrax and have them send you a hardened pin.

My Quaife should be in the car in a week or two.

Stock diff = trash.

Good Luck

As a friendly note, you oughta check the J.D.Power's owner's satisfaction level survey and you'll be surprised at how poorly Mercedes is revered by actual owners! I think you might be temporarily blinded by the image rather than the real numbers. Regardless, Best of luck on your repair.

My dad had a s500 and the car had absolutely no problems at all. Car drove like a dream. NO squeeking brakes, doors, no slamming of the trunk like your gonna break it just to close it, etc. Don't get me wrong though either...it defently wasn't a Viper either! This car's bold image and raw power are just amazing

i have had several mercedes, the current one is the 2004 s500, never has had one problem or complaint, nor did any of the others that i can remember.
People actually read those consumer reports and JD powers nonsensical reports and would buy a car based on those??
I thought those were for "spend thrifty's" who wanted to compare dishwahsers or toasters.

Ok I let you lead turn me. I would not think that too many Viper buyers were
"spend thrifty's", just broke in my 2005, I was just suprised that Mercedes and
VW rated as low as they were while BMW was still high, maybe their SUV is
bringing them down like Porsche, never had a prob with any of my 911s or the
4 Dodge trucks that I have owned but I know people who have.

Consumer reports did help me choose between Sub Zero/Wolf and Viking for my
new kitchen.

My differential had the same symptoms at 7,000 miles. Completely gave out at 30 miles later. Dodge replaced entire rear and no further problems at 15,000 miles. Cause was probably violent wheel hop. Suggest that you let off accelerator when wheel hop becomes more than normal and all stock vipers will have some wheel hop.
As to the Mercedes fans, I like them too. I plan to buy one when my social security checks kick in.
