SRT-10 at the Maxton Mile

In late September, I am taking my SRT-10 vert. to N.C. to run the Maxton Mile track, and I have a couple of questions for the speed experts. Please take into account that my Viper is totally stock, including the run-flats!

1. What speed can I reasonably expect on the 1 mile track?
2. Assuming that I actually reach that speed, is there any chance that the vert top will give me problems?
3. Finally, at whatever speed I am actually going, will the Viper act any differently than at 100 or so? If so, what can I expect?

Any comments or suggestions will be appreciated.

I assume you have roll bars, they wont let you go past 90 or 100 mph unless u have a coupe or roll bars, like Autoform makes.

black mamba1, no I do not have a roll bar. ECTA is sending me a rule book, which should be here any day. If they require a roll bar, then I will install one. As you know the roll bar issue has been addressed many times on this site, and if one is required by ECTA, it will force me to do what I should have done from day one.

I have raced SCCA Formula Fords for 5 years and also late model stock cars for 10 years, so I know the necessity of a roll bar, but short of a properly braced and crossed braced, welded in, roll bar, any so-called viper specific roll bars are just "window dressing"!

Thanks:usa:

Dixie,

I'm not familiar with the Maxton Mile (East Coast thing?) I have run standing 1/2 miles and a few standing one miles out West. The Nevada Open Road Challenge would be one of them

In any case, if this is a standing mile, i.e., start from a stop and accelerate as fast as you can for 1 mile, with your stock SRT-10 you should get to about 145 mph or a bit more if the elevation above sea level isn't too high.

If you are interested, check the results of the Nevada Open Road Challenge or as it is sometimes called, the Silver State. Keep in mind that this race is run at 6500 feet above sea level.

Though you should have a hard top, the rag top won't be a problem at that speed.

You should make sure that your tires are in very good shape and at proper inflation. Also be sure that the alignment on your car is set up for top end speed. You don't want large amounts of negative camber like you would on a road course.

Good luck, and remember to make only gentle inputs to everything at speed.

Both stock Vipers and stock C6 Z06's got to a max speed of 135 to 137 mph in the standing mile at the Silver State, but that event is held at 6500 feet above sea level.

in a 1/4 mile it would be 120, and i gotta think in a mile it would be lot higher than 145 but you obviously know better. just hard to imagine

Thanks all for the replys, especially ViperX. The Maxton Mile is run on an old military strip near Maxton, N.C. This strip has been around for many years and was the east coasts version of Bonneville. The governing organization of the meets is the East Coast Timing Assoc. The strip is 1.8 miles long which will give you 0.8 mile to slow down. The altitude of the strip is only 220 ft., therefore I can expect a few more mph that suggested.

I will be running the stock run-flats, with less than 3000 miles on them. As far as air pressure is concerned, would you suggest mfg, recommendations, over, or under inflation? As far as camber is concerned, would you suggest the factory specifications or somewhere closer to neutral?

Once again, thanks

I have run the mile at the Silver State a few times with my GTS (467 rwhp) and could only get to 148mph. I was disappointed. It is amazing how much power you lose at that altittude (I have heard as much as 25%). If you are at only 220 ft then I would expect you to get close to 160. Let us know the results. By the way, what does your car dyno at?

At the Sandhills Open Road Challenge in Nebraska, I went 159mph in my bone stock SRT-10. I could have gone faster with better shifting. 160mph is certainly possible at a reasonable altitude.

My Viper is strictly stock, not even K&N's or Green's. I don't race anymore (old age maybe:)), but I am still willing to go as fast as I can in a straight line.:drive:

I'll post my times when I come back, and maybe if I am not satisfied I will start looking into mods. With less than 3,000 miles in 2 years, I have decided to drive the car instead of leaving a garage ornament in my will for my son.:D

Thanks,

37,600 on my 04 - cruiser
28,500 on my 01 - track car
5,800 on my 06 - trip car

Yes, they are meant to be driven.
